St. Cloud State improves to 8-7, has outscored opponents 49-8 over four-game winning streak
LAKE WORTH, Fla. – St. Cloud State Baseball (8-7, 0-0 NSIC) closed their Florida trip by sweeping a doubleheader with Caldwell (5-5, 0-0 CACC) and Pace (10-2, 0-0 NE10) on Wednesday evening in Lake Worth, Florida. The Huskies outscored their opponents 28-4 with a pair of run-rule wins, extending their winning streak to four games ahead of conference play beginning next week.
Game One: St. Cloud State 17, Caldwell 3
A monster first inning fueled a 17-3 win over Caldwell as each of the first nine to bat reached base and scored on the strength of five singles, four walks and one error. The nine-spot was one of three crooked numbers produced by the lineup, as SCSU added four runs in both the fourth and sixth.
Ethan Navratil (3-for-3, R, 3 RBI) and Otto Grimm (2-for-4, 3 R, 2B, 4 RBI) and Tate Wallat (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI) each supplied multi-hit efforts in the win.
Eli Emerson threw well in his first collegiate start, covering 2.1 innings and striking out one. The righthander scattered three hits and a pair of walks while not surrendering an earned run. David Van Ort took over in the third and earned his first St. Cloud State win with 3.2 hitless innings of shutout relief, striking out five and working around three walks. Cooper Avery slammed the door with a 1-2-3 ninth, punching out two.
All 13 Huskies who took a trip to the plate reached base as the lineup produced 12 hits and worked seven walks.
Game Two: St. Cloud State 11, Pace 1
Drew Bulson (3-for-4, BB, 3 R, 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI) blasted a pair of no-doubt home runs including a walk-off shot to clinch the 11-1 run-rule win over Pace in the eighth, helping the Huskies close their trip to Florida with their fourth-straight win.
Just as they did in game one, SCSU set the tone early with a crooked number in the first – plating four runs as Sawyer Smith (1-for-4, HBP, RBI) and Ben Clapp (1-for-4, BB, 2 R, RBI) each produced an RBI before Bulson left the yard with a two-run shot. The Huskies tacked on one in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth before Pace finally scratched one across in the fifth.
Drew Beier pitched into the sixth in his first Huskies start, earning the win with 5.2 innings of one-run ball. The righthander struck out six while scattering five hits and three walks before giving way to former junior college rotation mate Grady Fuchs. The latter retired five of seven faced while dealing 1.2 scoreless out of the pen, striking out three. Sawyer Smith finished things out for the staff by retiring both batters he faced.
After a run in the sixth put SCSU within one of ending the game in the seventh and eighth, Bulson sent the fans home early with a towering walk-off first-pitch blast to lead off the home half of the eighth inning.
John Nett (2-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 SB) added a multi-hit game while reaching four times in the nightcap.
