SCSU shuts out Upper Iowa 2-0 in game one before falling 6-3 in finale
FAYETTE, Iowa – St. Cloud State Baseball (13-9, 5-2 NSIC) settled for a split at Upper Iowa (10-10, 6-3 NSIC) with a 2-0 midweek-opening win followed by a 6-3 loss in the finale at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies remain in third in the conference standings after the midweek split, just one and a half games behind NSIC leaders Minnesota State-Mankato and Minnesota Crookston.
Game One: St. Cloud State 2, Upper Iowa 0
Junior righthander Drew Beier gave the Huskies a gutsy start in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader, bulldogging his way through 5.0 scoreless innings of three-hit ball. Beier leaned heavily on his offspeed offerings, working around four walks to strike out four and to earn his third win in as many starts.
Blanked through three by Upper Iowa starter Colin Lacey, SCSU finally broke through in the top half of the fourth as Sam Riola (1-for-4, R, 2B, SB) doubled on a towering pop up that landed just in front of the second base bag. Garrett Bevacqua (0-for-4) advanced Riola to third with a flyout, then Drew Bulson (0-for-2, RBI, SF) plated him via a sacrifice fly. Ben Clapp (1-for-2, BB, R), Sawyer Smith (1-for-3) and Mason Primus (1-for-2, RBI) followed with three straight singles to add one more and make it 2-0 Huskies.
Beier battled through traffic in the fourth and fifth, stranding a runner in scoring position in both frames before giving way to Grady Fuchs. The SCSU closer retired six of seven faced to close out his fourth straight save, striking out three and walking one.
John Nett (3-for-4, 2B, SB) added a three-hit game, recording his 12th multi-hit effort in 22 games played this season.
Game Two: Upper Iowa 6, St. Cloud State 3
St. Cloud State struggled to manufacture runs in the midweek finale as Peacock starter Kyle Hrncir allowed just two runs on three hits while pitching into the sixth. Huskies spot starter David Van Ort threw well in his first bump of the season, allowing just two hits and punching out one across 2.1 scoreless. The Peacocks got to the SCSU bullpen in the fourth and fifth, building a 3-0 lead entering the sixth.
The Huskies loaded the bases in the top of the sixth for Tyler Schiller (0-for-1, 2 BB, HBP, RBI), who promptly brought home the visitor's first run by wearing a fastball in the back. Tate Wallat (1-for-2, BB, RBI, SH) drew a walk one batter later to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Upper Iowa responded with two in the home half. Sam Riola (0-for-5, R) reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh, stole second and scored on a Ben Clapp (2-for-5, RBI) single, making it a 5-3 ball game. The Peacocks added another after the stretch, then watched their top two relievers close out the split-salvaging win.
Drew Bulson (2-for-3) provided a multi-hit effort while Kole Krier struck out four over 2.1 innings of one-run relief.
