SCSU plates just six runs across two games, Riola homers twice in series while striking out 10
CROOKSTON, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (17-13, 9-6 NSIC) saw their lineup struggle to string together quality at-bats, producing just six runs while falling 4-3 and 5-3 in a midweek sweep at the hands of Minnesota Crookston (22-14, 12-6 NSIC) on Thursday in Crookston.
Game One: Minnesota Crookston 4, St. Cloud State 3
Sam Riola (1-for-3, R, HR, 2 RBI) starred on the mound and at the plate in the series opener, firing a complete game while taking a hard-luck loss in a one-run game. The righthander struck out 10 across 6.0 innings of work, allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits and a pair of walks.
Minnesota Crookston scored an unearned run in the first, then added one each in the third and fifth to take a 3-0 lead into the sixth. Riola blasted a two-run opposite-field homer in the top half, cutting the Huskies' deficit to one. The Golden Eagles scored a critical insurance run on a solo homer in the sixth.
SCSU made it a one-run game again in the seventh as Drew Beier (1-for-3) singled into center and watched as the ball skipped past the Crookston centerfielder, plating pinch-runner Noah Dehne all the way from first following a one-out single by Sawyer Smith (2-for-3). The Huskies would leave Beier at third as the tying run, dropping the opener 4-3.
Game Two: Minnesota Crookston 5, St. Cloud State 3
SCSU was done in by the long ball in the finale, as four of UMC's five runs came on home runs. Luke Tupy struck out nine over 6.0 innings of four-run ball, scattering four hits and three walks in a duel with Golden Eagles righthander Josh Dykhoff.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the third as Sam Riola (1-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI) launched his second two-run homer of the series, providing SCSU an early 2-0 lead. Minnesota Crookston plated three on back-to-back jacks in the bottom of the fourth, then added an insurance run in the sixth and eighth.
