Huskies plate 20 runs while producing 25 hits over two-game sweep
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (24-14, 16-7 NSIC) extended their winning streak to seven with a road midweek sweep of Bemidji State (2-41, 1-27 NSIC) on Thursday in Bemidji, downing the Beavers 10-5 and 10-4. The Huskies lineup produced 20 runs on 25 hits while blasting five home runs, moving SCSU to just 1.5 games behind Minnesota Crookston for third in the NSIC standings.
Game One: St. Cloud State 10, Bemidji State 5
Three-hit games from Ben Clapp (3-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) and Ethan Navratil (3-for-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) helped fuel a 10-5 Huskies win in the opener while Sam Riola (1-for-5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) blasted his 34th collegiate home run – moving him just one homer away from tying the program's career mark of 35.
Two-run home runs by Riola and Navratil were followed by an RBI single off the bat of Tate Wallat (1-for-4, RBI) helped the Huskies build a quick 5-0 lead in the first. Bemidji State cut their deficit down to one with a run in the second and three in the third before a towering three-run Clapp blast in the fourth made it 8-4 SCSU. The Huskies added two runs in the fifth on an error that plated John Nett (2-for-5, 2 R, 3B) and an RBI groundout courtesy of Sawyer Smith (0-for-2, 2 BB, R, RBI).
Drew Beier earned his fifth win of 2023 with 5.0 frames of four-run ball, scattering seven hits while walking none and striking out six batters. Grady Fuchs tossed the final 2.0 innings, striking out a pair and allowing a lone run on three hits and two walks.
Game Two: St. Cloud State 10, Bemidji State 4
Noah Dehne (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI) remained red-hot with a pair of homers while John Nett (3-for-3, 3 BB, 2 R, 4 SB) reached in all six trips and stole four bases to pace the SCSU lineup in a 10-4 sweep-clinching finale. Sam Riola (2-for-5, BB, 2 R, 3 RBI, SB), Ben Clapp (2-for-4, 2B) and Tyler Schiller (2-for-5, R) added multi-hit games as the Huskies extended their winning streak to seven games.
Riola opened the scoring in the first by scoring on a fielder's choice, then Dehne launched a solo shot in the second to put SCSU up 2-0. Riola smacked an RBI single to plate Nett in the third and Dehne added two more in the fourth with his second home run of the game – a two-run shot out to deep center. A five-run fifth keyed by two-run singles from Brayden Jacobson (1-for-5, R, 2 RBI, SB) and Riola made it 10-0, providing Jack Habeck with all the support he would need.
Habeck improved to 3-3 with 5.0 innings of five-hit baseball, allowing four runs while walking one and punching out six. Payton VanBeck impressed out of the bullpen with 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two baserunners on a pair of hits while striking out three.
