Huskies give up two goals in the first half, score one of their own in the second half
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (0-4-2, 0-1-1 GLIAC) dropped its game on Sunday afternoon at Husky Stadium to Davenport, 2-1. In the first 45 minutes, Davenport (2-2-2, 1-1-0 GLIAC) scored two goals and held the majority of the possession. In the second half, the Huskies dominated possession and created a handful of goal scoring opportunities. Noah Kantorowicz (Minneapolis, Minn.) was able to convert an opportunity, scoring a goal for the Huskies that cut the deficit in half. Despite the Huskies strong efforts in the second half, Davenport was able to hold on for a 2-1 victory.
TOP HUSKIES
"I thought we played three really good halves – the two on Friday night and the second one this afternoon were terrific but the first one today we were a little bit flat...the great challenge of conference play and certainly in the GLIAC, is that you have to do it twice in a weekend, in under 48 hours. We're still not as old and mature and tough as we need to be and I thought we were flat in that first half...I was really pleased with the response in the second half – we created chances, we were tougher at the other end, everything was better."
On players that stood out... "Zinedine [Kroeten] and [Philip] Caputo, our most attacking players, were terrific and Yuken [Harmon] is always a handful...Noah Kantorowicz's work zinging down the wing provided our goal to make it 2-1...there's a better understanding now between the worker bees in midfield – Andrew Holmes and Nolan [Pratumwon] – and the back four [Noah Eklund, Juan Villegas, Vukota Mastilovic and Owen Worsdell] who were pretty good today...Owen Worsdell, at left back, was terrific...Vuke [Mastilovic] has moved over to the left side of our middle two and he's been terrific – he's such a good leader and when he fights hard, the team follows suit. He was unlucky today – he had a couple of good headers off corners that we were unfortunate not to convert."
On conference games... "There's progress – it's hard, conference play is hard, its real, so you can be doing whatever in those first three, four, five, six games but then when conference comes, it's a new ball game. The best part about the conference is that it's double round-robin – you get to see these guys [Davenport] again. The guys always seem to play with an increased resolve in the second game because they know their opponents a little bit, they've seen them, it becomes a little bit more personal – I think we'll be ready."
On first conference road trip next weekend... "The turnaround is tight - Mondays are our day off, so we'll get two trainings before we have to get on the bus on Thursday and head to Kenosha (Wis.) and Hammond (Ind.)...Every week we've gotten a little bit better than the last week and the biggest challenge now is lengthening our bench and getting more guys in the second eleven prepared to compete...We have four of these weekends – we've had a home one, now we'll have an away one next weekend and I think we'll be ready – we did well against both of these opponents last year, so we need to go get some points on the road."
