St. Cloud State Men’s Soccer Set to Open GLIAC Play at Husky Stadium

Huskies will host their conference opener against Purdue Northwest and Parkside
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (2-3-0) will host their first conference game of 2026 at Husky Stadium on Thursday, September 17th against Purdue Northwest (0-1-3). The Huskies will then host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (0-2-1) on Saturday, September 20th.

Last Time Out
The Huskies finished non-conference play last week against Jamestown and UI-Springfield, hosting both games at Husky Stadium. St. Cloud State dropped the first game of the week to Jamestown 2-0 and stormed back to win 2-1 against UI-Springfield.
Andrés García got things going quickly for the Huskies, scoring the opening goal header in just the 5th minute of action off a corner kick from Kingsley Kanu. In the 39th minute, Husky keeper Erik Willke came out of his box to try to clear the ball, but the Prairie Stars, Robin Lemke Bergseth, kept it away from Willke to score the equalizer for UI-Springfield. Fortunately for the Huskies, Kanu would continue tallying points, as he opened the 2nd half with a goal of his own off the assist from Johan Lopez in the 49th minute. The Kanu goal would be the deciding factor, as the Huskies would go on to win 2-1, their first home win of the season in their final game of non-conference play.

Series History Against Purdue Northwest
Wednesday's game will be the 11th meeting between the Lions and the Huskies with the all-time record between the two teams at 6-5. The Huskies were victorious against the Lions in their last meeting just a season ago.
Recap of the Huskies Last Game Against PNW
As the game kicked off, the Huskies got the party started early for the second straight game and once again it was Owen Worsdell that opened the scoring. After flipping the field on the offensive end in the 13th minute, Finn Mankowski worked his way into the Huskies attacking zone. Dribbling close to 20 yards, Mankowski slipped a beautiful pass to Worsdell who snuck in-line with the last Pride defender. Worsdell took the ball and put the PNW keeper on skates as he fired a shot into the back of the net to give SCSU the early 1-0 lead. The Huskies maintained that lead throughout the first half despite the Pride firing 11 total shots, but only one landed on goal.
Coming off the halftime break, the Pride continued to create shots as they recorded three shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of the half, but all would be saved by Ramy Atia. The Huskies offense was able to generate multiple breakaway scoring chances that could have led to a 2-0 lead, but they were unable to capitalize on those chances. The defense of St. Cloud State stood tall the final 12 minutes of the game as they allowed only two shots. The Huskies would come away with a crucial 1-0 shutout victory on Senior Day as well as their regular season home finale.
Scouting Purdue Northwest
The Lions come into this game with a 3-0-1 record through four games. In their last match-up on September 5th, the Lions took down Walsh University (Ohio) 3-2. Purdue Northwest has already matched their win total from last season where they went 3-12-3.
Sophomore, Landon Potts leads the Lions with two goals, four points, and four shots on goal this season. Sophomore, Nikola Ivetic and Senior Brandon Young also aid in the Lions offense, each with a goal and an assist this season. Freshman, Alvear Estefano is the primary keeper for the Lions. Through four games he has allowed just three goals. He holds a 0.75 goals against average, 0.857 save percentage, 18 total saves, and a 3-0-1 record.
The Lions are coached by Luke Dunn, who's in his fourth season with the team. In his first year as the head coach, he led the men's soccer team to the schools and programs first-ever GLIAC Tournament Championship in 2023. Dunn returned to Hammond after serving as the head coach for Viterbo University. During his time in La Crosse, Wisconsin, he earned a winning percentage of .642 and the past two seasons went 31-3-2 (.889) with the program being ranked in the top 25 for the first time in over 20 years.
Series History against UW-Parkside
Saturday's game will be the 11th meeting in history between the Huskies and Rangers, with the Huskies trailing in the all-time series 2-6-2. The Huskies fell their last matchup to the Rangers 2-1 in 2025.
Recap of the Huskies Last Game Against UW-Parkside
The Rangers opened up the game with a bang as Jaime Vasquez headed in a corner kick in the third minute to give UWP the early lead. Parkside continued to work their way into the Huskies attacking zone as they drew a penalty in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Keven Sosa stepped up to take the kick as he looked to expand the Rangers lead. Sosa fired a shot low and right but would be denied by Ramy Atia who came away with the crucial save. St. Cloud State carried that momentum over the next few minutes as they created a breakaway attack. Following a clearance on defense, the Huskies created the opportunity for Owen Wasmund who would have a scoring chance. As the Parkside keeper came out to challenge, Wasmund chipped a shot high and just barely missed the equalizing goal. SCSU ultimately went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Coming out of the break, St. Cloud State was rejuvenated and created multiple corner kicks in the opening minutes. William Gonzalez nearly tied the game as he blasted a shot just wide in the 47th minute. Off of a defensive misplay by the Huskies deep in their defensive zone, Parkside capitalized on the opportunity in the 55th minute to now lead 2-0. A mere three minutes later, the Huskies cut the deficit in half as Worsdell found the back of the net. Following a foul, Ryder Delport delivered a ball into the attacking zone for the Huskies. Andrew Holmes made initial contact before Andrés García headed a pass to Worsdell who finished the setup with a shot across the goal that hit the back of the net. St. Cloud State maintained their newly found momentum with continuous shots on goal by García and Matteo Bosch, but nothing was able to equalize the game. With time ticking away, the Rangers nearly put the game away with a late goal in the 87th, but after review by the officials, it was called back after deeming an offsides occurred. SCSU was unable to tie the game in the final three minutes as they would fall 2-1 to Wisconsin-Parkside.
Scouting UW-Parkside
The Rangers come into this game with a 2-2 record through four games. In their last matchup on September 6th, UW-Parkside fell to Thomas More University 1-0. Parkside is one spot above SCSU in the GLIAC standings sitting at sixth in the conference.
The Rangers have scored three goals this year, resulting in three players tied for first in points with two. Sophomore, Angel Luevano has played the most minutes of the three with 350. The primary keeper for the Rangers is Senior, Mateusz Pass. Pass has accumulated a 1.25 goals against average, 19 saves, a 0.792 save percentage, and a 2-2 record.
The Rangers are coached by Jason Zitzke who's in his 16th season with the team. Under Zitzke's leadership, Parkside has emerged as one of the premier programs in the GLIAC. He has guided the Rangers to multiple GLIAC regular-season and tournament championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, and individual national honors. Parkside reached the NCAA Tournament five times during Zitzke's tenure as both a player and coach, including appearances in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023 as head coach.
