James and Smith knock in two RBI each in loss

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – St. Cloud State Baseball (5-6, 4-0 NSIC) dropped its series-opener to UC Colorado Springs (3-10, 0-0 RMAC), 11-5, on Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs. The Huskies grabbed a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning before allowing six unanswered runs to fall 11-5.

The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning following a two-run double from junior Sawyer Smith (Somers, Wis.) and an RBI single from senior Ben Clapp (Maple Lake, Minn.). After the Mountain Lions grabbed the lead after a pair of two-run home runs in the second, graduate Cal James (Buffalo, Minn.) responded with a solo home run in the third and a sac fly in the fourth to put the Huskies back on top 5-4.

UCCS then scored runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to close the game at 11-5.

NOTES

James hit his second home run of the season and drove in his 10^th and 11^th RBIs of the season. His two-hit day raised his average to .359 with a slugging percentage of .615 and on-base percentage of .500.
James has now scored a team-high 14 runs this season, and has recorded two hits in five of the last six games.
Smith hit his team-leading fourth double and increased his team lead in RBI to 16.
Gumbko has now hit safely in 10 consecutive games to open the season, raising his team-leading average to .371.
Clapp's two hits in the game marked his fourth multi-hit game this season.
