James and Smith Lead Offense in SCSU Baseball’s Doubleheader Split with U-Mary

James and Smith combine to go 11-16 with four HR and nine RBI, Tupy strikes out 10 in series opener
Redshirt junior Luke Tupy (New Prague, Minn.) was spectacular once again in the series-opener, striking out 10 batters over five innings while only allowing one run on three hits to improve to 6-1 on the season.
GAME 1: SCSU 15, UMARY 1
After giving up a solo home run to the leadoff batter, Tupy then went into cruise control, retiring nine consecutive batters while striking out seven batters over the first three innings. He then worked around two singles in the fourth before recording a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth to finish his day on a high note.
The Huskies had big innings in the third and fifth innings to put the game out-of-hand, scoring seven and five runs, respectively in the innings. In the third, six batters reached base with hits before the Mauraders recorded an out. Redshirt senior Noah Dehne (St. Paul, Minn.) and redshirt junior Garrett Bevacqua (Carlsbad, Calif.) each had two-run doubles in the inning while 11 batters came to the plate. Then, in the fifth inning, senior Drew Beier (Foley, Minn.) had a two-RBI single while five Huskies scored to extend the lead to 13-1. James' fourth hit of the game in the sixth inning made the score 15-1 while redshirt freshman Ryan Roehl (West Bend, Wis.) pitched two scoreless innings to close the game out.

- SCSU's 15 runs marked the third-highest output of the season for the Huskies, who scored eight or more runs for the sixth consecutive game and 10 or more runs for the fifth time in the last six games.

- Tupy matched a career-best with his sixth win of the season while reaching 10+ strike outs for the third time this season.
- He lowered his ERA to 2.81 on the season while recording a new career-best in innings pitched at 51.1.
- James recorded a season-best four hits with his 13th multi-hit game of the season. His three RBI give him 30 on the season.
- Beier extended his hit streak to 10 games with his 13th multi-hit game while recording his ninth multi-RBI game of the season.
- Dehne matched a season-high with three hits and had his fifth multi-RBI game of the season.
- Smith's three hits matched a season-high and extended his win streak to nine games.
Senior Payton VanBeck (Elrosa, Minn.) was solid on the bump for the Huskies in the second game, going, 5.2 innings while striking out six and allowing three runs (one earned). After VanBeck was chased from the game, Mary scored five runs in the sixth and five more in the ninth to take the game.
James and Smith were the high points of the second game, as they each went yard twice in the game, including back-to-back bombs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 6-6.

- James's two home runs and three RBI give him nine and 33 on the season, respectively. His two hits give him 14th multi-hit games this season.
- His two home runs mark his sixth career game with two home runs and second this season after also launching two against CSU Pueblo on Feb. 26.
- Smith's two home runs marked his first career game with two home runs and set a new career-best at five in a season. He also extend his hit streak to 10 with his 15th multi-hit game of the season.
- Beier extended his hit streak to 11 games, the second-longest streak of any Husky this season.
- VanBeck allowed one earned run or less for the fourth time this season, lowering his season ERA to 3.44.
St. Cloud State and U-Mary will battle for the series win on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT at Joe Faber Field.
