St. Cloud State Baseball Beats Wayne State 9-4 to Take Series Win

Dehne drives in three, Smith hits ninth home run, Habeck wins third consecutive start
WAYNE, Neb. – St. Cloud State Baseball (24-15, 20-9 NSIC) powered its way to a 9-4 victory and series win against Wayne State (22-16, 17-11 NSIC) on Sunday in Wayne, Neb. After securing its 20th conference win, the Huskies have now won or split eight of nine NSIC series they have played this season.
SCSU trailed on two different occasions throughout the game, but the grabbed the lead in the fourth for good while the Husky pitching staff left the Wildcats off the scoreboard for the final seven innings of the game.
Junior Sawyer Smith (Somers, Wis.) began the scoring off with a bang, launching a two-run home run in the first inning on the first pitch he saw to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Wayne State responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning, but then redshirt senior Noah Dehne (St. Paul, Minn.) pulled the Huskies even with his second double in as many innings in the top of the second inning. A groundout RBI from Wayne State in the bottom of the second inning gave Wayne State a 4-3 lead.
SCSU then took the lead for good in the fourth inning after a two-RBI double from senior Drew Beier (Foley, Minn.) and a sacrifice fly from Dehne to make the score 6-4. The Huskies would add insurance runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, but it was more than enough for the Huskies staff.
After giving up four runs (three earned) in the first two innings, starter senior Jack Habeck (Appleton, Wis.) blanked the Wildcats in innings three through six before giving way to the bullpen. Redshirt freshman Ryan Roehl (West Bend, Wis.) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings while redshirt sophomore Cael Kolacia (Fort Dodge, Iowa) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

- Habeck won his third consecutive start by going 6.0 innings with five strikeouts. He recorded five or more punch outs for the fourth time this season and went six or more innings for the fifth consecutive start and the seventh time overall this season.
