Huskies blast three home runs, get long outings from Tupy and VanBeck to seal wins
MINOT, N.D. – St. Cloud State Baseball (27-16, 23-10 NSIC) won both games of a doubleheader to open its weekend series with Minot State (14-29, 11-22 NSIC) on Saturday at Corbett Field in Minot. The Huskies hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning and held on the win 5-2 in the first game before a nine-run output in the second game to win 9-5. Redshirt junior Garrett Bevacqua (Carlsbad, Calif.) had two RBI in each game while redshirt junior Luke Tupy (New Prague, Minn.) and senior Payton VanBeck (Elrosa, Minn.) each logged wins on the mound.
GAME 1 – SCSU 5, MSU 2
Bevacqua and senior Ben Clapp (Maple Lake, Minn.) gave the Huskies a 3-0 advantage in the first game with back-to-back home runs in the second inning. SCSU then tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings with an RBI single from junior Ethan Navratil (Albany, Minn.) and a double from junior Sawyer Smith (Somers, Wis.).
The second inning blasts were all the insurance Tupy needed, as he gave up single runs in the second and seventh innings and departed the game after completing six innings while only allowing four hits and striking out seven. Senior Cooper Avery (Fort Myers, Fla.) came on in relief and shut the door to earn the save and close the game.
TOP HUSKIES
Both teams were held off the scoreboard through the first three innings of the game as senior Drew Beier (Foley, Minn.) started the game while making his first pitching appearance of the season. He went three innings while allowing no runs and just one hit while striking out four.
Graduate Cal James (Buffalo, Minn.) broke the scoreless game in the fourth with his 12th home run of the season before Beier and redshirt senior Noah Dehne (St. Paul, Minn.) had RBI's in the fifth with a double and sacrifice fly, respectively. SCSU's lead grew to 6-2 in the eighth inning before a three-run home run from Minot State allowed the Beavers to pull within one run at 6-5. The Huskies then responded with three of their own in the ninth inning to pad the lead back to four at 9-5.
Instead of his usual starting nod, VanBeck came on in relief in the fourth inning and then went the rest of the way, pitching six innings while allowing four earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out six to earn the win.
