Habeck logs season-best six strike outs to extend SCSU’s win streak to six
ABERDEEN, S.D. – St. Cloud State Baseball (18-11, 14-5 NSIC) finished off its four-game sweep and extended its season-long win streak to six with an 8-2 victory over Northern State (12-18, 7-13 NSIC) on Saturday in Aberdeen. Senior Jack Habeck (Appleton, Wis.) improved to 4-2 on the season with a solid start on the mound while junior Sawyer Smith (Somers, Wis.) knocked in two runs.
For the first time in the series, Northern State took a lead with a double in the first inning, but the lead was short-lived as SCSU broke through in the fourth inning and didn't look back. The Huskies took the lead with a ground out in the fourth inning to make the score 2-1. SCSU then added insurance runs in the eighth inning, extended its 4-2 lead to 8-2 after RBI singles from senior Drew Beier (Foley, Minn.) and redshirt senior Noah Dehne (St. Paul, Minn.), followed by a sacrifice fly from graduate Cal James (Buffalo, Minn.) and a ground out from Smith.
After giving up a first inning run, Habeck then cruised through six innings with six strike outs. He only came out in the seventh inning after two runners got on-base. Smith then took over on the mound for 1.1 innings before giving way to senior Cooper Avery (Fort Myers, Fla.) for the final 1.1 innings. Both relief pitchers did not allow a run or hit.
