James launches 13th homer, Huskies finish with second-most conference wins in program history
With the regular season concluding, SCSU honored its 14 seniors with a ceremony following the game.
The Huskies started the scoring in the second inning when they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The rally started when redshirt junior Kevin Butler (Naperville, Ill.) laid down a bunt to advance two runners, but the Bemidji third basemen threw the ball away, allowing senior Ben Clapp (Maple Lake, Minn.) to come around and score. Senior Mitchell Gumbko's (Ada, Mich.) groundout made it 2-0 followed by an RBI triple from senior Drew Beier (Foley, Minn.) and an RBI double from graduate Cal James (Buffalo, Minn.).
Bemidji State was able to grab a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning, but then the Huskies took the lead back for good in the sixth inning when they scored six runs. James provided the biggest punch of the inning with his three-run home run that extended SCSU's lead to 9-5.
SCSU would add on three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth. For the second straight game, the Huskies' final run came on a pinch-hitting appearance from a pitcher, as senior Payton VanBeck (Elrosa, Minn.) knocked in redshirt freshman Archer Ogbourne (Carlisle, Iowa) to make the score 14-5.
On the mound, the Huskies bullpen pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless ball to dispatch of the Beavers. Senior Cooper Avery (Fort Myers, Fla.) pitched 2.2 innings with four strikeouts to earn the win, while freshman Will Hess (Hartland, Wis.) and Smith pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
