Huskies score two runs in eighth inning, unable to complete comeback against Wildcats
BISMARCK, N.D. – 4-seed St. Cloud State Baseball (32-18, 28-11 NSIC) lost 3-2 in the first round of the NSIC Tournament to 5-seed Wayne State (27-21, 21-16 NSIC) on Wednesday at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, N.D. The Huskies gave up just two runs over the first seven innings, but did not score until the eighth inning, ultimately falling short of a comeback.
With the loss, the Huskies will move to the consolation side of the bracket, where they will have to win six games in a row to earn their second straight NSIC Tournament Championship. The Huskies had won nine-straight NSIC first round matchups until today.
FIRST ROUND – WSC 3, SCSU 2
WSC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, adding on with one-run innings in the sixth and eighth innings. Down 3-0, the Huskies found an answer in the bottom of the eighth – redshirt senior Noah Dehne (St. Paul, Minn.) hit his fifth home run of the season after a leadoff single from redshirt junior Garrett Bevacqua (Carlsbad, Cali.) to cut the deficit to one run.
Left-handed junior Kaden Pfeffer (Racine, Wisc.) made his fifth start of the season and continued his dominant stretch of play, striking out five batters over seven innings, giving up just two runs. Pfeffer has a 1.93 ERA and 23 strikeouts over his last four starts.
