Huskies record first ever tie in Madison, drop shootout as UW earns the extra conference point
MADISON, Wis. – No. 11 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (12-9-5, 7-9-4 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) skated to a 2-2 tie with No. 1 Wisconsin in the team's series finale on Sunday afternoon at LaBahn Arena in Madison, becoming just the second team to tie/beat the Badgers this season and the first to steal points from them in Madison. UW went on to win the shootout, 1-0, to earn the extra WCHA point.
SCSU opened the scoring late in the first period after fifth year forward Ally Qualley (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) batted the puck into the net after the Wisconsin netminder saved a shot from junior forward Svenja Voigt (Cologne, Germany) straight into the air. The Badgers (25-1-2, 19-1-2 WCHA) scored an equalizer with just over a minute left in the first period after earning a power play opportunity.
Wisconsin scored on another power play opportunity midway through the second period to take its first lead of the afternoon. The Huskies scored an equalizer of their own in the middle of the third period after fifth year forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) forced a UW turnover and took a shot that rebounded off the Badgers goaltender to sophomore forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) who was waiting in front of the net and beat the goaltender near side.
Neither team scored in the final 11:18 or during the five minute three-on-three overtime period, sending the game to a best-of-three shootout. Both teams missed their first attempt, and the Huskies missed their second shot, before Wisconsin made theirs. SCSU was stopped on its third shot, clinching the shootout win for the Badgers.
Freshman goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) was spectacular all game, saving 30 of the 32 shots she faced, while not allowing an even strength goal.
