Huskies score four power play goals for first time since 2023, Shostak records first collegiate shutout
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (3-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) scored all four of its goals on the power play to power past Vermont (2-2-0, 0-0-0 HEA), 4-0, in its series finale on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.). Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) scored twice while freshman goaltender Yan Shostak (Minsk, Belarus) made 21 saves to record his first collegiate shutout.
SCSU outshot the Catamounts, 14-4, in the first period, but with under two minutes to go, the Huskies had not yet been able to find the back of the net. While on their second power play chance of the night, SCSU was working the puck around for many chances and with 31 seconds left on the man advantage, they were able to strike. Senior forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) took the puck towards the left dot and drew a defender towards him before passing to junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta), who pivoted in front of the net and tried to jam the puck in. Vermont goalie Aiden Wright made the first stop, but there was Burnevik waiting for a rebound, jamming it in for the 1-0 lead with 1:49 minute left in the period.
The goal seemingly opened the water gates for the Huskies, who then scored twice in the first 3:19 of the second period to break the game open. First up was junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and pair of slick moves on the Huskies zone entry on the power play. Gross fed Hall at SCSU's blue line on the rush and Hall did the rest, making two Catamount defenders overcommit before deking past and all alone with the goalie. The Husky junior then buried a wrist shot top shelf for the score and 2-0 lead. Just over a minute later and again on the power play, SCSU struck again. Vermont tried to clear the puck but it was intercepted and kept in the zone at the blue line by Burnevik. The Huskies' leading goal scorer faked like he was going to take a wrist shot, causing two defenders to hit the ice in attempt to block, before switching to the backhand and beating the goalie to the five-hole for his second goal of the game.
SCSU scored its fourth goal of the night in the third period, again on the power play. With most the defense on the left side of the ice, freshman forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) held the puck under the goal line and waited for a lane to open. Roed waited till he was almost at the crease before finishing senior defenseman Max Smolinski (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) on the backside, who then buried the puck to the back of the net for his first goal as a Husky and a 4-0 lead.
