St. Cloud State played their final two regular season games at Husky Stadium this weekend as they took on Roosevelt and Purdue Northwest.
Against Roosevelt on Friday, St. Cloud State got the party started early in the game as they capitalized on a close free kick in the sixth minute. A foul that neared the box resulted in Matteo Bosch diming a great ball into harms way right in front of the goal. Roosevelt goalkeeper Eric Carval made initial contact with the ball before Owen Worsdell made a second touch to knock it into the back of the net as the Huskies took an early 1-0 lead. Roosevelt responded in the 19th minute after a deep throw-in led to a goal by Fynn Mewes to tie to the game. The Lakers continued to create scoring chances, but Ramy Atia ensured the game remained tied as he compiled six saves in the half including four saves following the Lakers goal.
Moving into the second half, the two teams continued their battle. The Lakers persisted in their offensive attack as they generated multiple corner kicks and shots on goal, but nothing came to fruition. In the 75th minute, Roosevelt pushed into the box as Caco Fernandez worked in deep. Fernandez slipped a pass through the Huskies defense to Mewes who gave the Lakers the lead. St. Cloud State recorded only one shot in the final 15 minutes as they would be defeated 2-1 against Roosevelt.
Prior to the Sunday's game against Purdue Northwest, the Huskies honored their 11 graduating seniors for Senior Day. The group has been a staple of the program the past few seasons and they received their deserved recognition. As the game kicked off, the Huskies got the party started early for the second straight game and once again it was Owen Worsdell that opened up the scoring. After flipping the field on the offensive end in the 13th minute, Finn Mankowski worked his way into the Huskies attacking zone. Dribbling close to 20 yards, Mankowski slipped a beautiful pass to Worsdell snuck in-line with the last Pride defender. Worsdell took the ball and put the PNW keeper on skates as he fired a shot into the back of the net to give SCSU the early 1-0 lead. The Huskies maintained that lead throughout the first half despite the Pride firing 11 total shots, but only one landed on goal.
Coming off of the halftime break, the Pride continued to create shots as they recorded three shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of the half, but all would be saved by Ramy Atia. The Huskies offense were able to generate multiple breakaway scoring chances to take a powerful 2-0 lead, but they were unable to capitalize on those chances. The defense of St. Cloud State stood tall the final 12 minutes of the game as they allowed only two shots. The Huskies would come away with a crucial 1-0 shutout victory on Senior Day as well as their regular season home finale.

The Save King
With 15 saves on the weekend, goalkeeper Ramy Atia became the programs all-time leader in saves as he now totals 112 career saves. Atia passed Gage Steiner who previously held the program record with 110. On Friday against Roosevelt, Atia tied Dylan De Baldo for the most saves in a single game with 10. In his shutout win over Purdue Northwest on Sunday, his five saves pushed him over the record. The senior from Des Plaines, Illinois is also now tied with De Baldo for the most career shutouts with five.
Ice in the Veins
Following his game-winning goal against Purdue Northwest, Owen Worsdell is now tied with former teammate Philip Caputo for the most career game-winning goals in program history with five. His game winner on Sunday was Worsdell's first of the season and was his 12th career goal, good for third all-time.
Time to Play the Game
By playing in both games this past weekend, seniors Rhys Ward and Owen Worsdell close in on becoming the program leaders in career games played. Ward and Worsdell are interlocked with 61 career games played each which is currently tied for fourth. The duo need to play in four more games to break the record of 64 games which is held by Mika Folstad and Nolan Pratumwon.
Playoff Push
With four regular season games left in the season, the Huskies eye a playoff push to close the season. The GLIAC standings are as follows:
The top two teams in the GLIAC will receive a bye to the semifinals while seeds three through six will battle in the quarterfinals. St. Cloud State has four games remaining and those all come on the road against Wisconsin-Parkside, Northern Michigan, Saginaw Valley State, and Davenport.
Series History
Friday's game against Wisconsin-Parkside will be the tenth overall meeting between the programs with the Huskies holding a 2-5-2 record in the series. The teams played earlier in the season at Husky Stadium where the Rangers came out victorious.
The Huskies opened up the game with a strong defensive performance. The midfield and backline for SCSU was smothering as they took away chances for Parkside to advance the ball up the field. Cutting off passing lanes and making breaks on the ball led to the Huskies holding Parkside to only two shots in the first half with none coming on goal. Offensively, SCSU generated six shots with one landing on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net as the game went into the half tied 0-0.
Out of the break, St. Cloud State continued their strong defensive play as the game remained at a standstill. In the 75th minute, the Rangers went on a counterattack after the Huskies cleared the ball. With quick and decisive passing, Parkside was able to work their way through the defense to give Kevin Sosa a shot on goal. Sosa capitalized on the chance to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. With time ticking away, SCSU worked the ball into their attacking zone multiple times during the final 15 minutes. They created a few scoring chances off two corners kicks, but nothing graced the meshing. The Huskies would ultimately be defeated 1-0.
Sunday's match against Northern Michigan will also be the tenth meeting between the programs with the series tied 4-4-1. The Wildcats took the first meeting against SCSU earlier in the season.
The Wildcats opened the game with a lot of energy and were pressing against the Huskies' defense. St. Cloud State held firm as goalkeeper Ramy Atia produced a few saves to keep Northern Michigan scoreless. In the 25th minute of the first half, NMU pushed the ball into the box and would be fouled which led to a penalty kick. Lucas Rosen stepped up to take the kick and capitalized on the opportunity to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Late in the half, SCSU generated a counterattack that saw Yuken Harmon streak down the field with a one-on-one breakaway chance. The Northern Michigan keeper stepped up and denied Harmon to keep SCSU scoreless. St. Cloud State ultimately went into the break trailing 1-0.
Coming out of halftime with a greater sense of urgency, the Huskies started to put pressure on the Northern Michigan defense. St. Cloud State was able to work their way into their attacking zone on multiple occasions, but nothing came to fruition. In the 82nd minute, King Dwumah Acheampong nearly equalized the game after a header in the box just missed the meshing. With time ticking away, the Huskies played higher up the field eyeing the game-tying goal. Northern Michigan went on to take away the ball and go on the counterattack with few Huskies to beat down the field. Ian Weimer of NMU passed the ball over to Teun Van Gansewinkel on the break for what appeared to be a free shot after Atia came out on Weimer. Yannick Langerhuizen sprinted back and saved the ball from scoring on the initial attempt. Van Gansewinkel followed through on his shot and finished off the opportunity to put the Wildcats up 2-0. That score held up as St. Cloud State would be defeated for the third consecutive match.
Scouting Wisconsin-Parkside
The Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers come into this game holding a 4-4-3 record with a 4-2-2 mark in conference play. The Rangers are currently seeded third in the GLIAC with wins against Northern Michigan, Purdue Northwest, Saginaw Valley State, and St. Cloud State.
