Huskies score 17 straight runs to blow open game, win series opener behind 8 RBI from Castro and Navratil
The Cougars were the first to score, grabbing a 4-0 lead with a four-run bottom of the second inning that included two home runs. The lead was short lived, however, as the Huskies responded immediately with five runs in the top of the third inning. Castro regained the lead with a three-run home run in the inning, plating Navratil and junior Wyatt Tweet (Russell, Manitoba).
The Huskies kept on the onslaught in the fourth inning with its second consecutive five-run inning. Tweet and Navratil provided the big hits of the inning with back-to-back two-run doubles to extend the lead to 10-4. The rout was on in the fifth inning as SCSU added on six more runs with four Huskies recording RBI, including a two-RBI single from redshirt junior Liam Moreno (Sun Prairie, Wis.). SCSU added one more run in the sixth to make the score 17-4 before a USF home run in the seventh to finish the scoring at 17-5.
After giving up three earned runs and four overall in the second inning, Husky starter junior Bryce Brassfield (Gilbert, Ariz.) settled in and lasted five innings to earn the victory, his second of the season. Brassfield only allowed two hits over the last three innings and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning with a double play to end the inning.
