Huskies looking to get back in the win column against Cougars
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (18-21, 14-12 NSIC) rounds out their five-game homestand with a midweek doubleheader against Sioux Falls (20-19, 16-10 NSIC). The Huskies enter the series in seventh place in the NSIC and will look to improve their playoff outlook with just 10 games remaining in the regular season.
The Huskies and Cougars met six times in 2025, four times in the regular season and twice in the NSIC tournament. The teams split the regular season series, which was held in Sioux Falls, but the Cougars won both postseason matchups. All-time, St. Cloud and Sioux Falls meet for the 40th and 41st matchups, with the Huskies holding a 26-13 advantage. This will be the first series in St. Cloud since 2021.

LAST TIME OUT
SCSU was swept in their last series, falling to Minot State on Sunday and Monday in a three-game series. The Huskies were shut out in the first two games by identical 2-0 scores, despite fantastic pitching performances from senior Kahler Key (Onalaska, Wis.) and redshirt freshman Conner Larson (Jordan, Minn.).
Key threw his first career complete game in the series opener, pitching seven innings while allowing just two runs and striking out seven. Larson followed with strong start, completing six innings with a career-high nine strikeouts. The righthander gave up two runs, but both were unearned.
In game three, the Huskies offense was able to break through in game three, but the Beavers bats also came alive as Minot State won 15-6. Redshirt junior Hayden Frank (St. Michael, Minn.) recorded two hits, including an RBI double, while redshirt freshman Max Robinson (St. Michael, Minn.) notched three hits, including a double, and scored two runs.
THE BRYCE IS RIGHT
In his second season with SCSU, senior Bryce Brassfield (Gilbert, Ariz.) has been lights out in the rotation for the Huskies. Brassfield leads the team in ERA (4.30), innings pitched (52.1), strikeouts (67), complete games (2), and is tied for the team lead in wins (3). He's already surpassed his junior season where he struck out 65 batters in 66.1 innings of work.
Brassfield has also been one of the top pitchers in the conference, leading the NSIC in strikeouts (67), while ranking second in complete games (2), fourth in innings pitched (52.1) and eighth in ERA (4.30).
In his last start against Concordia-St. Paul, Brassfield posted another strong start, completing 6.0 innings while striking out 10 and walking just one. This is the second straight start he has reached 10+ strikeouts and he has now pitched at least 5.0 innings in seven of his nine starts.
FRESHMAN LEADS THE WAY
Freshman Ryan Cahoon (Northfield, Minn.) has stepped in immediately and been a go-to bat in the middle of the lineup for the Huskies, leading the team and ranking second among all NSIC batters in on-base percentage (.545) and leads the team and conference in walks (40). In addition to those two categories, Cahoon is fourth on the Huskies in batting average (.327) while ranking second in triples (2) and OPS (.953), fourth in slugging percentage (.436), and seventh in hits (33).
Cahoon had five hits against Southwest Minnesota State on March 29, which is tied for the most hits in a single game by an NSIC hitter this season and the most by a SCSU hitter since John Nett had five on April 30, 2023, against Minnesota Duluth. Cahoon drew one walk in the series against Minot State, tying him for second all-time in SCSU single-season history.

Since joining the Huskies ahead of the 2025 season, junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) has been an extra-base machine, hitting 29 last season (16 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs) before adding another 25 (13 doubles, four triples, eight home runs) through 34 games this season. Castro's 29 extra base hits in 2025 led all Huskies and ranked just outside the top 10 on SCSU's single season all-time list.
Castro leads the Huskies in batting average (.366), OPS (1.152), hits (49), doubles (13), triples (four), home runs (eight), runs (30), RBIs (31), and slugging percentage (.701). He ranks among the NSIC's top 10 in numerous offensive categories, first in triples (four), seventh in doubles (13), fifth in slugging percentage (.701), ninth in batting average (.366), and fifth in OPS (1.152).
LARSON DEALING
In his redshirt freshman season, Conner Larson (Jordan, Minn.) has been steadily putting up zeros on the mound for SCSU. Larson has made seven appearances, including three starts, totaling 26.1 innings pitched. He's allowed earned runs in just two of those outings for a 4.10 ERA, and opposing batters are hitting just .172 against the righthander, the lowest mark on the team (minimum 5.0 innings pitched).
Larson last pitched against Minot State on April 19, making the start and working six innings and allowed just two runs, both unearned. Across his last three outings (16.1 innings), Larson has not allowed an earned run.
