Chris Mussman joined the Huskies coaching staff in March of 2014 and brings over 21 years of coaching experience at both the NCAA Division II and Football Championship Series (FCS) levels. He spent the previous 14 years at the University of North Dakota as an assistant coach for eight seasons followed by six years as head coach of the program.
As the head coach from 2008 to 2013, he led UND in its transition from an NCAA Division II program into the FCS. The 2011 UND team won The Great West Conference Championship, the first Division I championship in the program’s history. That same team also ranked in the top 25 nationally at the end of the season, another first in the program’s Division I history.
Prior to becoming the head coach at UND, Mussman was the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2007. From 1999 to 2001 he coached the offensive line and tight ends at UND.
Mussman coached at Minnesota State University, Mankato from 1991 to 1998. From 1996 to 1998 he was the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator with the Mavericks. He was the offensive line and tight ends coach and assisted in strength and conditioning from 1991 to 1996.
Mussman was an instructor at both UND and Minnesota State University. He was involved in several fundraising activities at both institutions as well.
Mussman holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Iowa State and a master's degree in sports management from MSU. He was a four-year letterwinner and starting offensive lineman at Iowa State, serving as a team captain in 1990.Â
