St. Cloud State, ranked #24 in this weeks D2Football.com poll is 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC North. Northern State improves to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the North Division. The Huskies host Bemidji State University next Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
A blocked point after attempt and a 34-yard touchdown pass from NSU quarterback Jared Jacobson to Mark Manley as time ran out put Northern State in position for the win. Kicker Felipe Alfaia made the extra point attempt to seal the win for the Wolves.
The Huskies had trailed 21-7 heading into the fourth quarter and scored 20 unanswered points, the final six on a two-yard touchdown run by Klaphake that gave SCSU a 27-21 lead with :42 seconds remaining. Northern State blocked the extra point attempt.
Northern's final drive began on their own 36-yard line with :37 seconds on the clock. On third and ten, Jacobson completed a pass to Jordan Piatz for a first down. Two plays later Jacobson found Piatz again for a 17-yard gain to the Huskies 34-yard line. The Wolves lined up for the final play and Jacobson found Manley on the left side of the end zone with three Huskies around him for the touchdown.
Klaphake completed 29 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns and led the Huskies in rushing with 20 carries for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
For the second straight week junior wide receiver Renard Robinson (Bloomington) caught two touchdown passes. His three-yard touchdown reception gave the Huskies and early 7-0 lead. His second TD catch of five yards tied the game at 21-21. He also had a catch in the Huskies final drive that put SCSU on the Northern State two-yard line. Robinson finished the day with five catches for 44 yards.
Junior wide receiver Chad Peterson (Winona) had a game high seven receptions and gained 56 yards. Redshirt first-year tight end Grant Thayer (Appleton, Wis.) caught a season and career high five passes for 92 yards.
Senior linebacker Mark Martin (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Huskies with six tackles. Sophomore defensive back Kyle Risinger (Excelsior) collected his second interception of the season and the Huskies 14th of the year.
For the Wolves, Jacobson completed 17 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Manley finished the game with seven catches for 98 yards and the game winning score.
