Jack Moro sets single season interception record with 11
St. Cloud State finishes the 2012 season with a 7-4 overall record and 5-2 in the NSIC North. MSU Moorhead ends the season 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the league.
Junior defensive back Jack Moro (Brookfield, Wis.) broke the single game school record for touchdowns as he picked off his tenth of the season at the 5:24 mark of the first quarter. The old record of nine has stood since the 1970 season and was held by Bill Trewick. He added his 11th of the season in the third quarter and has 14 in his career.
The win marks the 40th career win for SCSU head coach Scott Underwood, all with the Huskies. SCSU posted their fifth straight winning season as well.
Senior back up quarterback Brad Meade (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) was the starting quarterback in the final game of his collegiate career and is 3-0 in career starts. He found junior wide receiver Chad Peterson (Winona) on the Huskies second play of the game for a 51-yard touchdown play to give the Huskies a 7-0 start.
Juniors quarterback Phillip Klaphake (Princeton) threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more in the win. Klaphake and Eli Shoemaker (Graham, Wash.) connected on touchdown pass plays of 63 and 39 yards in the first quarter. Klaphake finished the game with nine completions for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for a season high 147 yards including a 94-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, the third longest touchdown run from scrimmage in Husky history. Shoemaker finished with four catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior linebacker Thomas Johnson (Little Canada) had a team high ten tackles on the afternoon. Moro finished the game with five tackles.
“At the start of the game we had some good plays and some bad,” said Underwood. “There were a lot of momentum swings with big plays on both sides of the ball with more for us. It's a win on difficult terrain.”
St. Cloud State finished the game with 518 yards of offense with 272 in the air. The Dragons compiled 281 yards of offense and were held to 54 rushing yards.
Eleven Husky seniors completed their collegiate careers today. “While we are disappointed in a 7-4 season, I am proud of our seniors. They set a standard for being a playoff team and national contender the last two years. I have a lot of respect for what our seniors have accomplished.
