The seventh-ranked Mavericks improved to 3-0 overall and in the NSIC. The Huskies dropped to 1-2 overall and in league play, and for the first time since the 2000 season have started 0-2 at home. The Huskies play at Wayne State (Neb.) College next week.
St. Cloud State junior running back Michael Walker (Walworth, Wis.) scored two touchdowns and junior quarterback Phillip Klaphake (Princeton) threw for a third to account for the Huskies scoring.
Walker caught a 41-yard pass in the first quarter that gave SCSU a 7-3 lead. His next touchdown was scored on a one-yard run that put SCSU up 14-10 early in the second quarter. The Huskies third touchdown of the night, a 44-yard pass from Klaphake to junior receiver Chad Peterson (Winona) gave the Huskies a 21-16 lead.
After the Huskies scored early in the third Minnesota State tacked on a safety to draw to within a field goal of the home team, 21-18. With 8:38 left in the fourth an MSU 33-yard field goal attempt missed wide left. The Huskies went three and out and on the next Mavericks drive, quarterback Mitch Brozovich completed an eight yard pass to Keyvan Rudd to score the eventual game winning touchdown with 2:33 left in the game.
Minnesota State finished the game with 378 yards of total offense while the Huskies gained 220 yards. The Mavericks Adam Thielen caught a game high six passes for 109 yards. Quarterback Jon Wolf, who left the game with an injury finished with 142 yards passing on 11 of 14 attempts and one touchdown. Brozovich finished the night 10 of 16 for 113 yards and one touchdown.
St. Cloud State redshirt first year player Ledell White (Milwaukee, Wis.) rushed for 31 yards and Walker finished the game with 30 yards rushing and 56 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Junior receiver Renard Robinson (Bloomington) caught three passes for 64 yards and Peterson finished the night with three catches. Junior defensive back Eric Poggenburg (Cedarburg, Wis.) had a game and individual career high nine tackles and one fumble recovery. Junior Miky Woods (Brooklyn Park) had one quarterback sack and three tackles for loss.
