Wayne, Neb. – In a tale of two halves, the St. Cloud State Husky football team left Wayne State with a 24-19 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win Saturday afternoon in Wayne, Neb.
St. Cloud State improved to 2-2 overall and in the NSIC. Wayne State is 3-1 overall and in league play. The Huskies host Minnesota Duluth next Saturday at Husky Stadium.
The first half belonged to the Husky defense while the second half belonged to the offense.
Junior running back Michael Walker (Walworth, Wis.) rushed 25 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns and redshirt first-year Ledell White (Bloomington) added 70 yards on 16 carries. Junior quarterback Phillip Klaphake (Princeton) completed 16 of 29 passes for 222 yards. Junior receiver Eli Shoemaker (Graham, Wash.) had five catches for 102 yards.
Wayne State was led by Benjamin Perry with 14 tackles and three quarterback sacks. Brian Kent rushed for 66 yards and one touchdown.
The Huskies finished the game with 345 yards of total offense to Wayne State's 165.
Defensively, junior Jack Moro (Brookfield, Wis.) had three interceptions and three tackles. Sophomore Kyle Risinger (Excelsior) had five tackles. Redshirt first year Jordan Sefon (Richfield) had his first collegiate interception.
The Huskies turned two first half turnovers into a quick 10-0 lead. Junior corner back Jack Moro (Brookfield, Wis.) returned an interception 17 yards for the first score of the game at 14:08 of the first quarter. It was his second interception of the season and fifth of his career.
Redshirt first year corner Jordan Sefon (Richfield) collected the first interception of his intercollegiate career at the 6:22 mark. On the ensuing possession senior kicker Tyler Aldridge (Woodbury) booted a 36-yard field goal to put the Huskies ahead 10-0 at 13:13 of the second quarter.
Wayne State got on the scoreboard with a 46-yard Max Martin field goal and followed with a 22-yard Brian Kent rush with 1:43 left in the half to tie the game.
While the first half belonged to the SCSU defense, the Husky offense started to click right from the beginning of the second half. Junior running back Michael Walker (Walworth) scored on a one-yard run on the Huskies opening possession to put SCSU up 17-10. Another one-yard Walker touchdown run capped a 12 play, 80-yard drive that took 5:30 off the clock and gave the Huskies a 24-10 lead at 2:56 of the third frame. Walker collected 66 rushing yards in the third quarter.
The first big play of the fourth quarter was Moro's second interception of the game and sixth of his career. A quick kick by junior quarterback Phillip Klaphake (Princeton) was blocked by Wayne State's Richard Daniel and returned to the Huskies nine-yard line. On Wayne's second play of the series, Moro intercepted the ball in the end zone.
He did it again. With just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter Moro intercepted Wayne State in the end zone for his third of the game. The last Husky player to pick three in a game was Tyler Niedfeldt who intercepted four passes against Minnesota, Crookston on Oct. 23, 2010.
The Huskies gave up a safety and Wayne drew to 24-12. On the following kick-off Wayne State's Kevin Paulsen returned the kick 77 yards to the SCSU eight yard line. He then caught an eight yard pass to draw the Wildcats to 24-19.
St. Cloud State held on to the onside kick and ran the clock out for the win.
