The Huskies improved to 1-1 overall and in the NSIC while Upper Iowa dropped to 0-2 overall and in the NSIC.
The game played at the newly renovated Harms-Eischeid Stadium was the first home night game in Upper Iowa football history.
St. Cloud State jumped to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, as junior Chris Hansen (Slayton) recovered an Upper Iowa fumble on the Peacocks first drive of the game. While the turnover didn't result in a Husky score, SCSU first year player Noah Waiwaiole (Blaine) recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead.
The Huskies second drive of the game resulted in an 18-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Phillip Klaphake (Princeton) and a 13-0 lead. An interception by junior linebacker Todd Bestgen (Rochester), the second of his career, led to a five-yard touchdown run by junior Michael Walker (Walworth, Wis.) with 1:15 left in the quarter and the Huskies never looked back from a 20-0 lead. Walker added a second touchdown on a one-yard run early in the third quarter.
Klaphake connected with junior receiver Eli Shoemaker (Graham, Wash.) on a 30-yard pass play to give the Huskies a 26-7 lead at the half. Redshirt first year player Ledell White (Milwaukee, Wis.) caught an 18-yard pass from Klaphake and senior linebacker Brad Wignes (Marseiles, Ill.) returned a blocked punt to close out the Husky scoring.
The final tally for the Huskies was two blocked punts for touchdowns, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and 448 yards of total offense.
Klaphake finished the game 19 of 28 passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns. Walker finished the night with 20 carries for 109 yards and two rushing touchdowns and collected three passes for 30 yards. His rushing performance marked the second 100-yard rushing game of his career.
Junior wide receiver Damon Treat (Fairfield, Calif.) caught four passes for 38 yards and Shoemaker collected three passes for 48 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively Chris Hansen had five tackles, one quarterback sack, one tackle for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Senior linebacker Mark Martin (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the team with six tackles and senior linebacker Thomas Johnson (Little Canada) collected the second interception of his collegiate career.
