Women's Hockey Skates to Victory Over #9 Minnesota Duluth

Duluth, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team kicked off their weekend road series with #9 Minnesota Duluth Friday night at AMSOIL Arena. St. Cloud skated to their first victory of the season with a 4-1 win over Duluth.
St. Cloud and Duluth came out in the first period playing great defense on both sides of the ice and goalies making big defensive saves to take a scoreless game to the first intermission. Duluth led shots on goal after the first period 11-7.
The Huskies started the second period on their first power-play opportunity and just after it ended they put the first points up on the board. Senior Julia Gilbert playing in her hometown area found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead at the 1:27 mark of the period. Assists were charted to senior Molli Mott and sophomore Skye Kelly.
On St. Cloud's third power-play opportunity of the game senior captain Amy Olson brought it home for the Huskies, burying the puck as it bounced off the right post taking a 2-0 lead at the 9:30 mark of the second. Audrey Hanmer and Sydney Burghardt were credited with the assists. This was Olson's first goal of the season.
Continuing to battle connecting passes and putting shots on goal the Huskies made it a 3-0 game at 13:42 as Molli Mott fired a shot from between the faceoff circles. Mott was assisted by teammates Abby Ness and Julia Gilbert.
At the 16:27 mark of the second St. Cloud sealed a 4-0 lead over UMD to head into intermission as Olson recorded the unassisted goal and her second of the game.
It was not until the 3:41 mark of the third when Duluth's Lara Stadler put the Bulldogs on the board making it a 4-1 game.
The Huskies finished the game going 5-for-10 on the power-play, while UMD was 4-for-8.
In goal for St. Cloud was junior Julie Friend recording 52 saves for the win, while Duluth's Kayla Black and goalie of record posted 14. Friend improves her record to 1-4-2 on the season.
This was the first time in the last 13 matchups between the teams that the Huskies have defeated the Bulldogs.
St. Cloud State (1-6-2, 1-5-1-1 WCHA) and Minnesota Duluth (4-4-1, 2-4-1-0) will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 2 for the final game of the series. The drop of the puck is set for 6:07 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.
