The Huskies are now 13-10 overall and will play a double-header against Adelphi University at 9 and 11 a.m. tomorrow.
Wayne State University (MI) Recap:
The Huskies didn't waste any time on offense as they put a run on the board in the top of the first. Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.) led off in the first with a base hit to left field. Roan advanced to second on a wild pitch and Taylor Thomas (Fontana, Calif.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring her to third. Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) connected on a sacrifice fly to left field to score Roan and put the Huskies up 1-0. The score remained unchanged until the top of the fifth when Kelly Olson (Oak Grove, Minn.) crushed a line drive over the right-center field fence. The Huskies kept the momentum going into the top of the sixth when Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) singled past the second baseman to start the inning. Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) advanced Canova to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit by Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa), putting the Huskies up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Wayne State put together a rally of their own and combined for three runs on three hits and one Husky error in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at three all. Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning, forcing the game into extra innings.
With international tie breaker rules in place, Breana Canova was placed on second to start the eighth. Steinle laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Canova to third. Grell was hit by a pitch giving the Huskies runners at both first and third. Natalie Shaft (Sioux Falls, S.D.) pinch ran for Grell and stole second allowing both St. Cloud State runners to be in scoring position. Megan Lehnen (Burnsville) poked a base hit over the infield to score Canova and put the Huskies up 4-3. Olson followed up with a right field-line single allowing Shaft to score and putting the Huskies up by two.
The Warriors were able to score one run in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enough. The Huskies prevailed in a 5-4 victory over Wayne State.
Kelly Olson and Breana Canova each posted two hits in the Husky victory. Olson went two for two with two RBI's.
Kelly Franks (Steven's Point) got the win as she pitched all eight innings for the Huskies. She allowed seven hits and struck out five batters.
