Men's basketball gains weekend sweep with 76-70 win over Augustana College

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State men's basketball overcame an 11 point deficit with nine minutes to play and went on to post a 76-70 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over Augustana College Saturday at Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies improved to 15-5 overall, 11-5 in the NSIC and 11-1 on their home court. Augustana College went to 13-9 overall and 10-6 in league play.

Augustana led 61-50 with 9:19 on the clock when senior guard Damarius Cruz (Plymouth) and junior forward Connor Niehaus (Fremont, Neb.) fueled a 20-2 run to give the Huskies a 70-63 lead with 3:03 left in the game. Cruz scored 14 of his 19 points in the run. Niehaus came off the bench to score seven points and pulled down two key rebounds. Cruz shot seven-of-12 from the field and was four-of-eight from three-point range. He also had five rebounds.
Senior forward Matt Craggs (Kimberly, Wis.) led all players with 23 points and had a team-high nine rebounds. The Huskies shot 47.2 percent from the field and made 19-of-24 free throw attempts.
Augustana's forward tandem of Yuriy Malashenko and Casey Schilling combined for 38 points and 20 rebounds. Schilling finished the game with 20 points and seven rebounds, and Malashenko posted a double double of 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Vikings out rebounded the Huskies 33-27 and shot 45.5 percent from the field.
The Vikings led from the middle of the first half, taking a 35-30 lead into halftime, until the five minute mark of the second half when Cruz made a layup to put the Huskies ahead 65-63.
After the Huskies gained a seven point, 70-63 lead at 3:03 of the second half, Augustana chipped away and pulled within two, 72-70 on a pair of Schilling free throws with :54 second left. A Craggs layup and one with 19 seconds left gave the Huskies a five point lead ,75-70. Craggs added a free throw with :11 seconds remaining to seal the win.
