Huskies Take Two Over Winona State, 4-3 & 4-1

Omaha, Neb. - St. Cloud State baseball and Winona State were back in action for a doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Omaha where the Huskies took both games winning 4-3 and 4-1.Â
In game one, the teams traded runs in the first inning keeping the game tied 2-2. SCSU's Eric Loxtercamp led off the inning with a single and Michael Jurgella hit a home run for the 2-0 lead. The Warriors came back to also score a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning for the tie.Â
Winona took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth off a solo home run but St. Cloud regained the lead in the top of the seventh. Zak Hoffman hit a solo home run for a 3-3 tie and then Brandon Arnold doubled to score Loxtercamp after he reached with a double making it a 4-3 game.Â
Earning the win for the Huskies on the mound in game one was Corey Fitzgerald with 6.1 innings of work and five strikeouts. Fitzgerald improves his record to 2-0 on the season. Reese Gregory came into finish the game for two innings to earn the save, which is his first of the season.Â
It was not until the fourth inning in the second game when St. Cloud would break the scoreless game for a 3-0 lead. Zach Hoffmann started the inning with a single and Garrett Fischer drove him in off a double. A couple more singles would bring in two more runs for a 3-0 game.
The Huskies extended their lead in the fifth after Arnold was walked and a couple groundouts, Fischer hit an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.Â
Winona was able to get one run on two hits in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough as the Huskies held them off for a 4-1 victory.Â
Chris Kubitz earned the win on the mound pitching seven innings in game two and striking out eight, while Gregory earned the save in two innings of work. Kubitz is now 2-0 on the season and Gregory has posted two saves.Â
St. Cloud State (13-4, 2-1 NSIC) will be back in action on March 29-30 as they take on Concordia-St. Paul with games starting both days at 12 p.m.
