Sioux Falls, S.D. - St. Cloud State baseball and the University of Sioux Falls were back in action Saturday for another doubleheader. The Huskies earned another series sweep as they shutout the Cougars in game one 6-0 and took game two 3-1.
It was a similar story to Friday as the Huskies got game one going right away taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. SCSU posted their four runs on four hits which included a RBI triple to right field by senior Garrett Fischer. The Huskies continued to move their lead scoring one run in the third and one in the fourth. Michael Jurgella tallied the RBI in the fourth off a single to right field making it a 6-0 game. Jurgella led the Huskies at the plate going 3-for-3 with one run and two RBI.
St. Cloud held the Cougars to only one hit in the game, while they posted nine. Pitching a complete seven inning game for the win was senior Chris Kubitz striking out 12 batters. Kubitz moves his season record to 4-1 with the win.
In game two, the first three innings were three up and three down for both teams before the Huskies could break through to post two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by Brandon Arnold and Jurgella would score one run with a sacrifice fly by Garrett Fischer for a 2-0 lead.
Sioux Falls and St. Cloud traded runs in the seventh inning but the Huskies would hold on to defeat the Cougars 3-1. SCSU ended the game recording six hits while USF tallied four in the game.
Earning the start and the win for St. Cloud was sophomore Garrett Harrison as he pitched 6.2 innings of work and struck out nine batters. Coming in as relief and posting the save after 2.1 innings of work was sophomore Reese Gregory. Harrison is now 1-1 on the season, while Gregory earned his fifth save.
The Huskies (25-6, 14-3 NSIC) are set to be back in action on April 17-18 as they play host to Upper Iowa.
