Huskies Sweep Twin Bill Over Upper Iowa Thursday, 8-2 & 12-2

Fayette, Iowa – St. Cloud State baseball and Upper Iowa University kicked off their four-game series Thursday afternoon. With the series originally scheduled as a home stint for the Huskies it was moved due to the winter weather in the St. Cloud area. SCSU took both games winning 8-2 and 12-2.
In game one, St. Cloud started it off posting one run in the first on two hits and two Peacock errors including a RBI single by Michael Jurgella for the scoring run. A triple to left center by Eric Loxtercamp would take the Huskies to a 2-0 lead in the second.
The Huskies continued to move their lead as they brought in five runs on four hits and two errors in the third inning for a 7-0 game which included a double by Zak Hoffman. Upper Iowa was able to post two runs in the top of the sixth, while St. Cloud tallied one run in the bottom half of the inning for an 8-2 game.
Leading the Huskies at the plate was Loxtercamp as he went 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI. Senior pitcher Kyle Fischer earned the win on the mound with five innings of work allowing only one hit and striking out three. Fischer is now 6-1 on the season. Logan Spitzack also saw action with two innings of work.
St. Cloud once again took a lead right away in the first inning with two runs on three hits and one error. The inning included a RBI double to left center by Reese Gregory for the 2-0 lead. The teams would trade runs in the fourth for a 3-1 game but then the Huskies would pull away in the fifth. SCSU took a 6-1 lead off three hits and one Peacock error in the fifth.
Taking the game to a 10-run rule, the Huskies posted six runs in the bottom of the sixth off of six hits to include a RBI double to right center by Sam Boisner making it a 12-2 game. Leading at the plate was Gregory as he went 3-for-4 with one run and four RBI.
Pitcher of record in game two was senior Corey Fitzgerald with six innings of work on the mound to strike out six. Fitzgerald moves his season record to 6-0 on the season. Pitching one inning of work was Ryan Diers to allow only one hit.
St. Cloud State (27-6, 16-3 NSIC) and Upper Iowa (9-16, 2-10 NSIC) will be back in action for their final doubleheader series Friday with the first pitch set for 12 p.m. in Fayette.
