Baseball Splits Series vs. Upper Iowa Friday, 1-2 & 7-3

Fayette, Iowa – St. Cloud State baseball was back in action Friday afternoon for their final doubleheader series against the Upper Iowa Peacocks. The Huskies split the series as the fell in game one 2-1 but prevailed in game two by a final of 7-3.
In game one the teams traded runs in the first inning for a 1-1 game with the Huskies scoring on a wild pitch. Brandon Arnold had the only hit of the inning with a single to third base. Scoring was stagnant until the top of the sixth inning when the Peacocks were able to score off a single through the left side to take a 2-1 lead. Upper Iowa would hold off St. Cloud to take the 2-1 victory in seven innings.
Putting in 5.1 innings of work on the mound and pitcher of record was senior Chris Kubitz as he struck out four batters. Kubitz moves his record to 4-2 with the loss. Pitching relief was sophomore Reese Gregory for 1.2 innings of work.
In game two, St. Cloud took the early lead in the bottom of the first scoring one run on one hit and one Peacock error. Eric Loxtercamp got the inning going with a double to right center and scored on a pass ball for a 1-0 lead.
Trading runs in the second kept the lead in favor of the Huskies with a 2-1 game. It was Loxtercamp showing up big again for the Huskies with a RBI double down the right field line to score Zak Hoffman. SCSU extended their lead 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth off one hit and one error by Upper Iowa.
The Peacocks would tie the game up 3-3 in the eighth but the Huskies were not done yet as they posted four runs in the bottom of the eighth to win 7-3. The four runs came on five hits, which included a two-RBI single down the left field line by Loxtercamp.
Earning the win on the mound for the Huskies was Reese Gregory as he pitched four innings of work allowing only two hits and striking out three. Gregory improves his record to 7-1 on the season. Starting on the mound and pitching five innings of work was Garrett Harrison.
St. Cloud State (28-7, 16-4 NSIC) is set to be back in action on April 23 for a doubleheader series against rival Minnesota State. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. from Mankato.
