Mavericks Sweep Huskies in NSIC Rival Series, 3-1 & 12-2

Mankato, Minn. – St. Cloud State baseball was in action Wednesday afternoon as they took on NSIC rival Minnesota State in Mankato at the MSU Baseball Complex. The Mavericks earned the series sweep over the Huskies winning 3-1 and 12-2.
In game one it was St. Cloud taking a 1-0 lead over the Mavericks in the top of the fourth inning as Brandon Arnold started the inning off with a bunt single and scored from third off a groundout by Zach Hoffmann. MSU came back to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth off a single and back-to-back triples for a 3-1 victory in seven innings.
Pitcher of record for the Huskies was senior Kyle Fischer as he pitched seven strikeouts and allowed only six hits in six innings of work. Fischer moves his record to 6-2 on the season.
In game two, Minnesota State took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning as they scored off a triple to left field by Nolan Johnson. St. Cloud came back though to tie the game up 1-1 in the top of the second as Zak Hoffman singled and moved to second on the throw to score Reese Gregory from second.
The Mavericks regained the lead posting one run on no hits and one SCSU error for a 2-1 game heading into the third inning. MSU's Johnson would take them to a 4-1 lead in the third as he hit a two-run home run with one out on the board. Continuing to extend their lead, MSU made it a 6-1 game in the sixth inning and then took a 10-1 lead in the seventh posting four runs on two hits and one SCSU error.
St. Cloud was able to get one run in the top of the eighth to trail 10-2 as Zak Hoffman doubled to left center for the RBI. The Huskies could not hold on as Minnesota State scored two more runs in the eighth for a final score of 12-2.
Pitcher of record for the Huskies was senior Corey Fitzgerald as he pitched 5.1 innings of work to allow seven hits. This was Fitzgerald's first loss of the season to move his record to 6-1. Also seeing action on the mound were seniors Scott Sanderson for 1.2 innings of work and Nick Maiers pitching the top of the eighth.
St. Cloud State (28-9, 16-6 NSIC) will finally host their 2014 series home opener this weekend on April 26-27th as they will play host to the Bemidji State Beavers after playing 37 games on the road. Saturday's twin bill will get underway at 2 p.m. with Sunday's first pitch set for 12 p.m. from Joe Faber Field.
