Dassel, Minn. - St. Cloud State baseball and Bemidji State kicked off their four game series Friday night from Dassel after moving the series up one day due to inclement weather coming into the area on Sunday. The Huskies snagged two victories over the Beavers winning 4-2 and 5-1.
In game one, it was Bemidji State taking an early lead over the Huskies scoring one run in the first off two hits including a single to right field for the 1-0 lead. Extending their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third, the Beavers scored as Bo Schmitz singled through the right side.
St. Cloud would come back though to tie the game up 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth as junior Michael Jurgella hit a two-run home run over the right field fence. The game was tied 2-2 until the sixth when the Huskies put up two runs on two hits including a double by Jurgella and a two-RBI single by sophomore Reese Gregory for a 4-2 game. Leading St. Cloud at the plate was Jurgella as he went 3-for-3 including a home run and two doubles along with posting two RBI.
Pitching three innings of work to allow only one hit for the win was Reese Gregory in the seven-inning game. Gregory stuck out five batters and moves his season record to 8-1 with the win. Earning the start and pitching three innings was senior Chris Kubitz while senior Scott Sanderson also saw action on the mound.
In game two, the Beavers took the first lead scoring one run in the first on a single through the left side for a 1-0 game. The bottom of the third inning brought three runs on three hits and two Bemidji State errors for the Huskies to take a 3-1 lead. The inning included singles by Eric Loxtercamp, Brandon Arnold and Zach Hoffmann.
Scoring went stagnant until the bottom of the eighth when St. Cloud was able to put two more on the board as senior Travis Enger entered the game to pinch hit and gripped down on a two-run single to left field for a 5-1 game.
Pitching a complete nine innings in game two was sophomore Garrett Harrison. Harrison allowed only four hits and struck out eight as he moved his record to 2-1 on the season.
