SCSU Football’s Rally Comes Up Short in 34-27 Loss To No. 25 Minnesota Duluth
10/10/2015 6:03:00 PM | Football
Meyer threw a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and also completed a two-point conversion to bring the Huskies to within a touchdown with 5:31 remaining in the game. After a strong defensive three-and-out forced a UMD punt, the SCSU offense took the ball over on their own 24-yard line. Completions to junior receiver Jameson Parsons for 24 yards and senior Grant Thayer for 22 yards put the Huskies on the Bulldogs' 35 with a first down. Meyer completed an eight-yard pass to freshman John Pass for eight yards on second down before the UMD defense stiffened and forced two straight incompletions to take the ball back with 1:03 remaining in the game to ultimately secure the victory after a fourth-down penalty on SCSU.
Meyer had a career-high 424 yards and 33 completions and tied his career-best effort with four touchdowns in defeat. He completed eight of his passes to Parsons for 163 yards and a score. Thayer also was able to secure a pair of touchdown passes and 77 yards for the Huskies.
The Huskies offense put up 494 yards with 424 of those yards coming through the air against a stout UMD defense. SCSU also had a 27 to 14 advantage over the Bulldogs in first downs.
The Huskies defense that limited Drew Bauer, the NSIC's North Division Preseason Player of the Year, to 88-yard rushing on 14 attempts and 191 yards on 11 completions to aid the team stay in the game was led by Craig Szymanski and Brady Westart's eight tackles.
Despite giving up 27 points, UMD's defense recorded three sacks, eight tackles for loss and 11 pass breakups in the contest.
UMD scored first in the game on a Jamiah Newell's one-yard rush to make the score 6-0 after a failed two-point conversion with 13:20 remaining in the opening quarter. SCSU rallied and tied the game at six on a Thayer six-yard reception with 8:08 remaining in the first quarter after a blocked kick. UMD took the lead back on the ensuing possession on Darren Walker's one-yard rush. The Huskies against rallied later in the first quarter and got to with-in a point, 13-12, on a 26-yard pass to senior tight end Brandon Richmond after the failed extra point. In what was shaping up for an interesting contest, UMD scored another touchdown with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter (1:48) on a 49-yard pass connection to Beau Bofferding.
The score remained 20-12 until the third quarter when UMD scored a pair of touchdowns to take a commanding 34-12 lead and setting up the Huskies' fourth quarter rally.
The SCSU football team now returns home to Husky Stadium and hosts Minot State on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
