ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Redshirt freshman Curtwan Evans ran for a career-high 148 yards and a touchdown to lead a balanced St. Cloud State (4-3, 2-1 NSIC North) rushing attack to a 42-28 victory over Minot State (1-6, 1-2 NSIC North) on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Husky Stadium. Evans was one of three Huskies to top 100 yards rushing in the contest.
Besides Evans' career-high 148 yards on 14 carries, senior Ledell White recorded 106 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown and sophomore Jaden Huff ran for a 102 yards on his 13 carries and also crossed the end zone. The 100-yard games were the second of the season for both White and Huff. The Huskies pounded out 368 of the team's 494 total yards on the ground.
After trailing at the break by a 14-7 score, SCSU took control of the contest with 301 rushing yards in the second half. After receiving the second half kick, the Huskies began the third quarter with a very heavy rushing attack and ran 10 straight times for 88 yards. Junior quarterback Nate Meyer finished off the drive and tied the score at 14 all on his 12-yard scamper.
A quick three-and-out gave the Huskies the ball back and the team promptly marched down the field in three plays and 50 yards to take the first lead of the contest on junior Jameson Parsons' 42-yard touchdown reception from Meyer.
A forced punt again gave the Huskies the ball back at the end of the third quarter and Evans carried the ball eight times for 69 yards on the drive before scoring on a five-yard plunge into the end zone to give SCSU a 28-14 lead.
Minot State cut the deficit in half, 28-21, on Jose Escobar's 12-yard pass to Keegan Verdugo. The biggest play on the drive was Jarvis Mustipher's 60-yard dash. Mustipher ran for 175 yards and a touchdown in the loss for MSU.
Evans and the Huskies offense put the game back to two scores, 35-21, on a five play, 65-yard drive. Evans carried the ball five times for 58 yards on a drive that was finished on Meyer's 17-yard pass to redshirt freshman John Pass.
MSU answered the touchdown on the ensuing drive with Escobar completing a 29-yard pass to Porter Strum to again make it a one-score game, 35-28, with just over five minutes remaining in the contest.
White helped the Huskies ice the game and finished off a five play, 77-yard drive with 17-yard rush for a score. White and Huff combined to run for all 77 yards on the drive with White running for 52 of them.
The SCSU football team is on the road next and travels to Bemidji State to play at Chet Anderson Stadium on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
