St. Cloud, Minn.- The St. Cloud State volleyball team battled hard but was unable to take down the University of Sioux Falls, as the Cougars took the match 3-0 on Oct. 29 at Halenbeck Hall.
The first set started on a high note for the Huskies (8-17, 3-13 NSIC) when senior Marissa Kline opened the match with a service ace. The Cougars (16-8, 10-6 NSIC) were able to find their groove quickly though and got out to a quick 6-3 lead. The Huskies recovered however and the match went point for point between the two teams with the Cougars ultimately outlasting the Huskies to take set one 25-23.
The second set started all Sioux Falls as the Cougars jumped out to another quick lead. But the Huskies were not to be denied and found themselves within two at 17-15 late in the set. Unforced hitting errors and a strong Sioux Falls block would eventually seal the deal for the Cougars and they walked away with the second set victory 25-20.
After the intermission, the Huskies came out sluggish allowing Sioux Falls to get up 6-2 before Coach Chad Braegelmann called his first timeout. The Huskies quickly side-out and were able to get two quick points from freshman libero Clara Krenz who served two service aces in a row. The Cougars would not be held down however, and battled back to a three-point lead. The Huskies would frustrate the Cougars' top point getters late in the match with blocks and superb net play forcing the visitors to call a timeout. After a breather, the Cougars regained their composure and would take the set and the match with a third set victory of 25-19.
The Huskies offense was spread around in the match with Macy Weller leading the team with eight kills and Micah Nier, Taylor Rollo and Nicole Miller each adding seven kills on the match. Kline dished out 31 assists and Clara Krenz held down the back row with 11 digs. Krenz also finished the night with three aces, followed by Miller who added two and Kline and Emily Mankowski who each added one ace.
The Cougars' offense was led by Lexi Scott who had 11 kills on the night and setter Sydney Schaap who dished out 28 assists.
The Huskies will close out their home schedule on Nov. 4-5 when they play host to MSU-Mankato and Concordia-St. Paul.
