St. Cloud, Minn.- The St. Cloud State Volleyball team closed out its home schedule for the season on Nov. 5 when they fell in three tight matches to #1 Concordia-St. Paul at Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies (8-19, 3-15 NSIC) started the match strong, getting a quick 2-0 lead on the Golden Bears on the heels of calm and steady defense. The Golden Bears would tie the game at two each which would set off a chain of ties throughout the first half of the set. The Huskies had 8 leads on the Golden Bears, with two of those by two or more points.
The Huskies found success early on in being the team to break the tie, but at 14-14, Concordia's height was able to stifle the Huskies offense. The Golden Bears were able to jump out to a 16-14 lead over the Huskies when Coach Braegelmann took a timeout to get the Huskies settled in, but the momentum was all Concordia as they would finish the set soon after winning it 25-17.
The second set looked like it was going to be a landslide in favor of the Golden Bears, but despite allowing CSP to jump out to an 8-0 start, the Huskies never quit. St. Cloud State was able to put itself in control of the game after jarring the Golden Bears out of system and slowing the pace of the game. The Huskies were able to close the lead down to 8-10 before Concordia put together a string of plays and took a 13-8 lead, which prompted a St. Cloud State timeout. The Huskies would again close down the lead but the Golden Bears were able to withstand the Huskies' push and close out the set at 25-21.
The third set started with the two teams again going point for point, before unforced errors by the Huskies gave the Golden Bears a 7-3 lead. Again, the Huskies called timeout and were able to regroup and catch back up to Concordia at 12-13. However, the Golden Bears' offense would turn on its afterburners and take over the match by only allowing the Huskies four more points, winning the third and decisive set 25-17.
The Huskies were led on the match for the second night by junior Nicole Miller who followed up her season high 15 kills against Minnesota State with 11 kills against the Golden Bears. Senior Shannon Klink added eight kills which pushed her over the 200 kills mark for her final season as a Husky. She now sits at 204 kills on the season. Becca Gruber also added eight kills on the match and senior Macy Weller added six kills with senior Taylor Rollo picking up three kills. Senior setter Marissa Kline dished out 30 assists while also putting away three kills and leading the Huskies with 10 digs against the Golden Bears. Miller had two service aces on the night, with Weller and freshman libero Clara Krenz each also adding an ace.
The Golden Bears were paced by freshman middle blocker Sara Macek with 15 kills, while senior setter Kasey Williams dished out 39 assists and fellow senior Emily McDonough held down the defense by picking up 16 digs.
The Huskies will close out their regular season Nov. 11-12 when they travel to play Winona State and Upper Iowa respectively. St. Cloud State will take on Winona State Nov. 11 at 7 p.m., followed by Upper Iowa on Nov. 12 at 3 p.m.
