Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From UW-Parkside, 5-4 & 5-3

ST CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (6-2) got back on the winning track with a doubleheader sweep of University of Wisconsin-Parkside (0-4) by scores of 5-4 and 5-3 on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Husky Dome.
Junior Jessica Goerger led the offensive effort for SCSU with four hits, three RBIs on the day including the game-winning home run in the second game. Redshirt junior Jordin Novak picked up three hits including the game-winning infield single in the first game over the Rangers.
Senior Senna Francesconi (2-1) threw a complete game in the first contest with four runs allowed and four strikeouts. Freshman Kate Kopeck (1-0) was the game-two hurler and also threw a complete game for the Huskies with seven strikeouts and three runs allowed in earning her first collegiate victory.
Game One
In the first game, UW-Parkside took the early lead in the third inning on Carly Dundee's three-run home run to right field with Paige Schmittling and Madison Manders on base.
SCSU answered and with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the advantage back. Junior Rebecca Harps started the rally with an infield single. She was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Veronica Wold, took third on an Abby Bunnell bunt single and came in to score the team's first run on junior Alyssa Coletto's two-out single up the middle. Goerger then doubled in Bunnell with her hit down the line. Coletto scored on the same play as the UW-Parkside second baseman dropped the relay throw. Novak then doubled to left field to score Goerger.
The Huskies made the lead hold up until the top of the seventh inning when Dundee hit her second home run of the game to tie the contest up at four all.
In the bottom of the frame the Huskies got a big two-out infield hustle single to the by Novak to drive in Bunnell with the game winner. Bunnell started the rally with her infield single to the second baseman, moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a ground out and raced home as Novak dove into the bag just ahead of the throw to .
Game Two
The Rangers, for the second time in as many games, took the early lead with Paige Schmittling recording a single, moving to second on a ground out and hustling home to score the first run of the game on Raegan Fingerman's single down the right field line.
SCSU tied the game on a wild pitch scoring Coletto from third in the bottom of the opening inning.
The Huskies took their first lead of the contest using some small ball. Bunnell walked, stole second and moved to third on a Coletto single. Freshman Samantha Boettcher was inserted to run for Coletto and stole second. On the attempted play at second base, Bunnell stole home for the team's second run of the game. Boettcher smartly moved to third base on the attempted play at the plate. Jessica Goerger then flew out to the UWP second baseman in deep enough territory in right field to plate Boettcher with the team's second run of the inning and third run of the contest.
The Rangers rallied and tied the game at three all in the top of the fourth inning on Rachael Seefeldt's two-run home run.
The game remained knotted at three until the bottom of the sixth inning when Goerger launched her second home run of the season to centerfield to give SCSU the lead. The Huskies added an all-important insurance tally later in the frame on senior Tricia DeBoer's single to right field to score pinch runner Brianne Hightshoe from third. Hightshoe was running for Novak, who double directly after Goerger's home run.
St. Cloud State will host the Kelly Laas Invitational from Feb. 18-21 at the Husky Dome. The Huskies will start their tournament play and take on Nebraska-Kearney at 5 p.m. on the opening day of the tournament. The team is then scheduled to play against Central Missouri on Feb. 19 at 2:30 p.m., Fort Hays on Feb. 20 at 9:30 a.m., Emporia State on Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. and Missouri Western on Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
