Softball Hosts Kelly Laas Memorial Invite This Weekend

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (6-2) is set to host the Kelly Laas Memorial Invite from Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 18-21, at the Husky Dome. Five NSIC team will participate in this year's invitational and an additional five teams from the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) are also in the tournament field.
The Huskies will start off the invitational and take on Nebraska-Kearney (4-4) on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 5 p.m. SCSU then hosts Central Missouri (5-5) on Friday, Feb. 19, at 2:30 p.m., Fort Hays (1-3) on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 9:30 a.m., Emporia State (4-6) on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. and wraps up the tournament on Feb. 21 against Missouri Western (4-3) at 2:30 p.m.
A daily pass to the tournament is $10. All high school and grade school students (ages 6-18) are $5 daily. SCSU students with valid IDs get in FREE and all children aged five and under are also FREE. Tickets are available for purchase at the entrance to the Husky Dome.
The softball team is also selling 16oz cups to Blue Line South for $5. The cup is good for one free beverage daily from Blue South from Feb. 18-21. For more information or to purchase a cup please see a member of the softball team.

- This will mark the fifth Kelly Laas Memorial Invitational
- The invitational will also carry a Coaches vs. Cancer theme in honor of former Husky player Kelly Laas, who passed away in March of 2011 following a courageous battle against ovarian cancer.
- Laas, of Frankfort, Ill., began her softball career at St. Cloud State in 2008 and was an elementary education major.
- In her memory, St. Cloud State named the annual dome invite the Kelly Laas Memorial Invite beginning in the spring of 2012.
- St. Cloud State is running live stats for all five home games this week.
- SCSU is 3-7 all-time against Nebraska-Kearney, 3-5 against Central Missouri, 2-0 against Fort Hays, 2-4 against Emporia State and 12-5 against Missouri Western.
- The Nebraska-Kearney Lopers are led by senior Makenzi Dallas, who is hitting .450 with nine hits, two doubles and five RBIs.
- Senior Kelly Ruwe has a .440 batting average, 11 hits, two home runs and 9 RBIs.
- The Lopers top pitcher has been sophomore Meg Housholder, who has two wins and 20 strikeouts in 23.2 innings pitched.
- The Central Missouri Jennies have won three straight games and are coming off a 49-16 record and a trip to the NCAA Division II Softball Elite Eight in 2015.
- Central Missouri's freshman Emily Robinson was named the MIAA's Pitcher of the Week this past week.
- Robinson is 2-2 with a 2.97 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched this season.
- She also is hitting .292 with seven hits, two doubles, a home run and six RBIs as a hitter.
- Junior Lauren Mabe has been the Jennies top hitter with a .345 batting average, 10 hits, seven runs, four doubles and seven RBIs.
- The Fort Hays State Tigers are being led by senior Tori Beltz, who has four hits and two RBIs this season.
- Senior Paxton Duran has been the top pitcher for the Tigers in the circle with a victory and 15 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched.
- The Emporia State Hornets have been led this season by junior Sarah Glass, who is hitting .355 with 11 hits, six runs, two home runs and five RBIs
- The club's top pitcher is Eryn Stockman, who has three wins, a 2.06 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched.
- The Missouri Western Griffons are led by junior Morgan Rathman, who has a .407 batting average, 11 hits, six runs, three doubles and 14 total bases
- The Griffons top pitcher has been senior Janie Smith, who is 2-0 with 12 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched while sporting a 1.50 ERA.
- The Huskies are being led offensively this season by juniors Jessica Goerger and Alyssa Coletto
- Goerger is hitting .529 with four extra bases among her nine hits including a pair of home runs.
- She also has walked six times and leads the team with her seven RBIs
- Coletto is hitting .520 with 13 hits, six runs scored, two doubles, two triples, a home run and five RBIs.
- She also leads the team with five multi-hit games.
- Junior Rebecca Harps is hitting .435 with six runs scored and 10 hits along with six RBIs
- Junior Abby Bunnell leads the team in runs scored with 10.
- Bunnell is also hitting .367 with 11 hits, seven stolen bases and five RBIs.
- Redshirt junior Jordin Novak leads the team and the NSIC with her .556 batting average.
- Three of Novak's five hits this season have gone for extra bases (two doubles and a triple)
- Junior Megan Hedstrom has a team-high three wins in the circle.
- Senior Senna Francesconi has two wins, a pair of complete games, 14 strikeouts and leads the team in innings pitched (19.2)
- Freshman Kate Kopeck has the lowest ERA among the pitchers (3.06) and leads the staff with 16 strikeouts.
- The Huskies lead the NSIC in batting average (.375), stolen bases (21) and triples (9).
- The club also has totaled 14 doubles, four home runs and 49 RBIs through the first eight games this season.
- After a busy weekend of action, the SCSU will be off next week and travel to play in the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. from March 3-9.
- The Huskies start the tournament with a pair of games on the opening day of the tournament, March 3, against Lake Erie College at 9 a.m. at Hancock Park (Field 4) and against Saint Anslem College (Field 4) at 11 a.m.
- The Huskies will play a total of 12 games while in Florida for the annual spring break trip.
