St. Cloud State Softball Falls in Final Games of Nonconference Play to No. 16 Pittsburg State

Huskies drop game one 5-4, game two 9-5 in extras
PITTSBURG, Kan. – St. Cloud State Softball (18-8, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) was swept by No. 16 Pittsburg State (26-1, 0-0 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) in its second and final doubleheader of the MIAA/NSIC Crossover on Saturday at the Pittsburg State Softball Field in Pittsburg. The Huskies fell 5-4 in game one and 9-5 in nine innings in game two.
GAME ONE: #16 PITTSBURG STATE 5, ST. CLOUD STATE 4
After a leadoff walk, junior catcher/infielder Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) hit a two-run shot to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead. PSU responded with a sac fly in the next half inning to make the game 2-1. In the third inning, junior infielder Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) pushed the Huskies lead back to two after hitting a solo home run over the center field wall before the Gorillas responded in the next half inning with a solo shot of their own.
In the fourth inning, SCSU scored to make the score 4-2. Pitt State cut its deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth inning and won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out RBI single and a Husky error that allowed the game winning run to score.
TOP HUSKIES
Weiss opened the scoring with a two-RBI double in the third inning to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead before PSU responded with an RBI-double and an RBI-single in back-to-back at bats to tie the game at two in the home half of the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Gorillas took their first lead of the game after scoring two runs, but then SCSU responded in the next half inning with a two-run shot off the bat of senior infielder Sydney Roe (Davenport, Iowa) to tie the game at four. Neither team was able to score in regulation, and both teams plated one run in the eighth, so the game continued into the ninth. The Huskies went three up, three down in the top of the ninth and PSU ended the game with a walk-off two-out grand slam.

The Huskies return home for the first time in 22 games/since Feb. 7 on Saturday and Sunday to open NSIC play against Minot State (11-7, 0-0 NSIC) and UMary (10-12, 0-0 NSIC) respectively. - Weiss hit her team leading second home run of the season. She recorded her team leading sixth multi-RBI game of the season and extended her on-base streak to five games.
- Holmes hit her team leading second home run of the season and scored her 21st and 22nd runs of the year which leads the team for the most by seven.
