CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Cloud State softball team (9-8) split their two games on Friday, March 4, to Salem International and Tiffin University, at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
The Huskies earned a dramatic walk-off 5-4 victory over Salem International (5-3) in the first contest with freshman Jaiden Lund doubling in a pair of runs to secure the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. The team lost in the second game of the day by a close 2-1 margin to Tiffin University (5-5).
Freshman Kate Kopeck (2-1) won the first contest after coming into the game in the top of the seventh inning and securing a pair of outs. Junior Megan Hedstrom (4-4) earned the start and took the loss in the second game despite allowing just two unearned runs in her six innings of work. She gave up five hits and struck out three. Senior Senna Franseconi earned a no-decision for SCSU in the first game as she went the first 6.1 innings and struck out six.
In the first game against Salem International, the Tigers opened the scoring with a run in the third inning on a Tori Butler RBI double to left center.
SCSU took the lead back in the bottom of the frame when junior Ashley Bunnell walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored ahead of the home run from Jessica Goerger. For Goerger it was her third home run of the campaign.
The Huskies added a single tally to lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as freshman Samantha Boettcher scored a run after being inserted to run for sophomore Libby Bingham off the ball hit by junior Rebecca Harps that was mishandled by the shortstop.
The Tigers drew a run closer in the top of the fifth inning as Hanna Crews hit a sacrifice fly to plate Jordan Whitaker.
Salem International rallied and took the lead in the top of the seventh inning with Katie Chryssofos knocking in a pair with her two-RBI single.
SCSU would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to earn the dramatic victory. Harps started the rally by recording a single up the middle, moved to second on a wild pitch and then third on Goerger's single. With runners on first and third, junior Megan Larkin was inserted to run for Goerger and both runners raced around the bases for the tying and winning run on Lund's one-oout double to the gap in right center.
The Huskies took the early lead in game two in the third inning on Bunnell's RBI ground out to score Bingham. Bingham began the inning with a double, moved to third on sacrifice bunt from senior Taige Puetz and scored the game's first run on Bunnell's ground out.
The Dragons took the lead for good with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning on the benefit of only one hit.
St. Cloud State continues play in the Spring Games and takes on Lock Haven University (4-4) on March 5 at 1 p.m. and Notre Dame College (3-8) later that afternoon at 3 p.m.
