
St. Cloud State Baseball sweeps NSIC rival Augustana on April 16

The pair of victories improves SCSU's season mark to 28-2 overall and 13-2 in the always rugged NSIC. The victories helped SCSU move into first place in the NSIC standings ahead of Augustana, which falls to rallied from an 8-0 deficit in the first inning to score an 18-14 victory over NSIC league leader Augustana University on Saturday, April 16 at Joe Faber 20-10, 11-3 NSIC.
In game one, Augustana charged to an 8-0 lead in the first inning before the Huskies started their comeback with five runs in the bottom of the first that was jump started by a lead off homer by Brandon Arnold. Reese Gregory followed later in the inning with a three run homer that trimmed the Viking lead to three.
In the second inning, SCSU charged to a 9-8 lead. Arnold opened the attack with a two-run homer that was followed up by RBIs from Zak Hoffman and Gregory.
Augustana added three more runs in the top of the third but SCSU added four more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 13-11 lead. Karl Sorensen connected on a two run homer to ignite the offense for SCSU in that inning.
The Huskies iced the game with five runs in the fourth inning as a three RBI single by Kyle Lieser and another two run homer by Sorensen helped SCSU clinch the win. Augie added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning before SCSU's defense shutdown the Vikings in the final inning to gain the win.
On the mound, Miles Nablo was the pitcher of record with 4.2 innings of relief work that include three strikeouts, 10 hits allowed and seven runs allowed. Bryan Rohde and Logan Spitzack completed the game in relief for the Huskies. In the game, SCSU outhit the Vikings 16-14.
Arnold led SCSU with three hits, four RBIs and four runs, while Sorensen had four RBIs, two hits and four runs. Gregory also had three hits, three RBIs and one run, while Lieser had three RBIs, two hits and three runs. Of note, a total of nine home runs were hit in the game by the two teams.
In game, two, SCSU had to rally from a 3-0 deficit after 1 1/2 innings of play. In the bottom of the second, SCSU scored four runs to on a grand slam by Lieser to make the tally 4-2. Augustana then came back with three runs in the top of the third to make it 6-4. In the fourth inning, SCSU narrowed the gap to 6-5 when Reese Gregory scored on a single by Zach Metzger. In the bottom of the fifth inning, SCSU tied the game on a homer run by Gregory before they posted two runs in the sixth inning on a double by Sorensen that scored Judd Davis and Lieser.
The Huskies maintained their lead into the eighth inning when Arnold crashed another homer to make the final tally 9-6 in game two. SCSU outhit the Vikings 14-8 in the game. Giese was the pitcher of record for the Huskies with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Logan Spitzack came into the game to finish the final three innings of play for SCSU with three strikeouts to his credit and no runs allowed.
At the plate, Sorensen had three hits and two RBIs and Lieser had two hits and four RBIs in the game. Gregory and Davis also had two hits in the contest for SCSU.
In the two games, SCSU pounded out eight homers while Arnold had three home runs and Sorensen and Gregory each had two homers in the doubleheader.
The Huskies and Vikings will play again on Sunday, April 17 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The NSIC doubleheader will begin at Noon and tickets are available at the gate. All SCSU students with a valid ID card get into the games for free.
