Football Downed 21-16 By Northern State

St. Cloud, Minn.  – St. Cloud State's football team (6-3, 3-2 NSIC North) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end as Northern State (4-5, 3-2 NSIC North) earned the 21-16 victory at Husky Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 28.
Junior Gregory Lewis led the offensive charge for SCSU with 21 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Dwayne Lawhorn completed 17 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown. Senior Cole Otto had five catches for 80 yards. Sophomore John Solberg totaled five catches for 65 yards. Junior John Pass hauled in five passes for 35 yards. Sophomore Anthony Carver had one reception for 30 yards and a touchdown. Senior Gary Koehring led the squad with his 11 tackles and two quarterback hurries. Junior Jack Horter picked up nine tackles, two pass breakups and 1.5 stops for loss. Junior Jamari Manuel had six stops plus a forced fumble and a pass breakup. Sophomore Ferris Ingraham and senior Jeremy Koffi both had fumble recoveries. Koffi also picked off a pass as did fellow senior Carvel Graham. Graham also forced a fumble along with his four tackles.
Northern State's Nicholas Truen ran for 93 yards and also had 50 yards receiving. Hunter Trautman connected on 27 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Noah MacPherson had 11 tackles, a sack, two stops for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery touchdown. Cody Braeger picked up nine tackles and a stop for loss.

SCSU picked up 346 yards (135 rushing and 211 through the air) plus 21 first down, but the team also fumbled the ball three times. The team controlled the clock for 32:09. It was the eighth time in the nine games this season that the Huskies has held an edge in time of possession.
Northern State scored first on a Trautman to Cameron Eisenhauer 34-yard pass connection. The Nathan Shaw extra point was good to put NSU up 7-0 with 6:34 remaining in the opening quarter.
NSU scored their second touchdown of the first quarter as MacPherson sacked the quarterback, stripped the ball and returned the fumble for a 53-yard touchdown. The Shaw extra point was good to put Northern State up 14-0 with 4:09 remaining in the first quarter.
Northern State made it three touchdowns in the opening quarter as Trautman connected with Cody Kraft on a 47-yard touchdown. The Shaw extra point was good to finish off the three play, 53-yard drive and put the Wolves up 21-0 with :51 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Huskies scored their first touchdown of the game as Lewis scampered in from five-yards out. The extra point from freshman Adam Stage was good to finish off the seven play, 61-yard drive and put the score at 21-7 with 6:50 remaining in the second quarter.
The Huskies crept closer as Stage finished off a nine play, 33-yard drive with his 34-yard field goal with 9:55 remaining in the third quarter.
The game remained 21-10 until Lawhorn was able to connect with Carver on a 30-yard touchdown pass to put the Huskies down 21-16 with 3:12 remaining in the contest. The team's attempt at a two-point conversion to draw within a field goal failed to keep the score at 21-16.
Northern State took the attempted failed onside kick at the SCSU 47 and did not give the ball back. The Wolves converted on a crucial fourth-and-one from the SCSU 38 in order to salt the game away with just over a minute remaining in the contest.
St. Cloud State has the team's final regular season road game of the campaign next weekend with a trip to Bemidji State to take on the Beavers at 1 p.m.
