Men’s Basketball Hosts Husky Hoopster Classic This Weekend

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (1-1) returns home to host the Husky Hoopster Classic this weekend at Halenbeck Hall. The program will open the tournament with a 7 p.m. contest against Mayville State (1-2) on Friday, Nov. 17. The other game on Friday night will be Saint John's and the College of St. Scholastica at 5 p.m. The second day of the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 18, consists of Mayville State and the College of St. Scholastica playing at 4 p.m. and the Huskies hosting the Johnnies at 6 p.m. that evening. The SCSU game is the Alumni Game where all alumni are encouraged to come back and watch the program play.

Scouting Mayville State
- The Comets are coached by Darren Tighe, who is entering his first year running the program.
- He has the team off to a 1-2 start
- The team started the season with a 111-52 victory over Providence College.
- The program then lost to Peru State, 79-70, and Briar Cliff, 89-76.
- Mayville State has been led this season by Daniel Lingren, who is averaging 23.3 points per game.
- He is one of three players averaging in double figures this season along with Creighton Pfau (10.0 pts. per game) and Eric Staebler (10.0 pts. per game).
- Taylor Delaughter leads the team with his average of 10 rebounds per game.
- The Comets are averaging 85.7 points per game and getting 55.7 rebounds per contest.
- Mayville State has played a pair of exhibition games over the last week against South Dakota (L, 87-59) and Minot State (L, 81-46).
- The program went 9-18 last season and had a mark of 2-14 in the North Star Athletic Association.
- Mayville State in an NAIA school located in Mayville, North Dakota.
Scouting Saint John's
- The Johnnies are coached by Pat McKenzie, who is starting his third season in charge of the program.
- The Johnnies are opening their 2017-18 season this week with the two tournament games.
- Saint John's went 19-9 last season including a mark of 13-7 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
- The program, who are the preseason favorites in the MIAC and ranked No. 20 nationally in Division III, are expected to be led this season by David Stokman
- Stokman averaged 18.1 points per game as a sophomore and was selected earlier this season for the D3hoops.com Preseason All-American Team.
- He shot 50.3 percent last season from three-point range to rank second in all of Division III.
- Stokman also shot 88.5 percent from the free throw line to place ninth nationally.
- The program returns each of the top six scorers from last season including four that averaged in double figures.
- Also returning in Tyler Weiss, who averaged 16.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game as a junior, Jubie Alade, who sported an 11.8 points per game average as a freshman, and Patrick Strom, who totaled 11.7 points per game as a junior.
Prior Meetings
- SCSU is 7-0 all-time against Mayville State since the first meeting in 1948-49.
- The last meeting was an 88-73 SCSU victory during the 2015-16 season also in the Husky Hoopster Classic.
- This will be the 113th meeting between SCSU and Saint John's with SCSU holding a 65-47 advantage since the first game in 1924-25.
- The Huskies defeated the Johnnies by a 95-77 score last season in Collegeville.
- Gage Davis had 21 points and 10 rebounds.
- Andy Foley put up 18 points and eight assists.
- Mark Hall has 19 points.
- The Johnnies defeated SCSU by an 83-80 margin the last time these teams met in Halenbeck Hall during the 2015-16 Husky Hoopster Classic.
- The teams have split the last four games of the series.

- The Huskies started the season with a 76-70 victory over Missouri Southern State last weekend at the MIAA/NSIC Challenge.
- It was the first win in three all-time meetings with the Lions.
- The program fell to the host schools Pittsburg State, 72-62, on the second day
- SCSU and Pittsburg State have now split the four all-time meetings.
- Coach Matt Reimer is 2-2 all-time in the season opening game.
- Senior Jon Averkamp had 25 points in each of the first two games.
- He is second in the NSIC in scoring with his average of 25 points a contest.
- Junior Brindley Theisen picked a career-high 23 points in the win over Missouri Southern State.
- It was his first time scoring more than 20 points in a game.
- Theisen also reached double figures in scoring in the second game with 16 points.
- He is ninth in the NSIC in scoring at 19.5 points a game.
- Theisen is also eighth in the league with his six made threes.
- Junior Sean Smith had a strong opening game at MSSU with 14 rebounds.
- His 14 boards were the most for the program since Jon Averkamp also had 14 rebounds against Minnesota Duluth last season (1/17/17).
- Smith ranks third in the NSIC in rebounding through the first week of the season with his average of 9.5 rebounds per game.
- Adam Heede-Andersen led the team in assists with five in each game.
- Heede-Andersen is fifth in the NSIC in assist per game (5.0).
