Men’s Basketball Opens Home Season With 67-51 Victory over Mayville State At Husky Hoopster Classic On Friday

St. Cloud, Minn. –Senior Jon Averkamp recorded a double-double to lead the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (2-1) to a 67-51 victory over Mayville State (1-2) in the team's home opener and the program's first game at the 2017 Husky Hoopster Classic on Friday night, Nov. 17, at Halenbeck Hall.
The double-double was the first of the season for Averkamp and the second of his career as he put up a season-high 26 points and 10 rebounds. He also shot 9-for-15 from the field plus knocked down a pair of threes, had two steals and two assists. Junior Sean Smith recorded his first career double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Smith also had four blocks and a steal. Junior Brindley Theisen totaled nine points. Senior Andy Foley led the team with his four assists. Junior Adam Heede-Andersen had four steals. Freshman Tristen Hull totaled four rebounds and three steals.
The Comets put three players in double figures led by Daniel Lindgren's 14 points. Eric Staebeler had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Gorg Alhad also reached double figures with 10 points.
The Huskies shot 35.3 percent from the field (24-for-68) and only 20.8 percent from three-point range (5-for-24). The team held a slight 45-41 advantage on rebounds, but were able to force 24 turnovers.
The Huskies led 36-25 at the half and owned a slight 31-26 lead in the second half. SCSU led wire to wire in the contest with their only being one tied score. SCSU largest lead of 17 points came with 12:46 remaining in the game on a made jumper from Averkamp to put the team up 51-34.
The Huskies wrap up play in the Husky Hoopster Classic with a contest against in-town rival Saint John's (1-0) on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m.
