Maas collects four hits in SCSU victory over SMSU, 12-3

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (2-3, 0-0 NSIC) got back on the winning track with a big 12-3 non-conference victory over NSIC rival Southwest Minnesota State on Monday, March 6. The game was played today in Tucson, Ariz.
SCSU grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning and then added six runs in the third inning to seal the decision. The Huskies also added two runs in the fifth inning to make it 11-3 and then one more run in the top of the ninth to cap the score at 12-3. In the contest, SCSU posted 17 hits and SMSU had 10 hits.
Sheldon Miks started the game and pitched two innings before reliever David Kroger added two innings of relief work. The eventual game winner was Zach Siggelkow, who finished the game with 5.0 innings of work, no runs allowed and six strikeouts. In total, SCSU's pitchers tallied 13 strikeouts in the game.
At the plate, Cooper Maas continued his early season hitting season with four hits in the game. Hayden Gerlach pounded out SCSU's first round tripper of the season in the game with his third inning grand slam that helped gain the victory. Judd Davis, Bo Schmitz, Zach Metzger and Jackson Goplen also had two hits apiece in the game, while Mitch Mallek had a triple in the game.
SCSU will continue their 2017 season with a 9 a.m. game against Southwest Minnesota State in Tucson. Fans can listen to all the action live on the KVSC Sports Stream tomorrow morning from Tucson.
