St. Cloud State baseball stretches win streak to 7 games

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (18-6, 10-3 NSIC) stretched its winning ways to seven games with a 14-0 and 3-1 doubleheader sweep against Upper Iowa University (9-11, 5-7 NSIC) on Saturday, April 1 in the Huskies' home opener at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
Under sunny skies, the Huskies used a six run third inning to break open game one. After scoring one run apiece in the first two innings, SCSU rolled out six runs in the third inning to gain an 8-0 lead. In the fourth inning, SCSU added two more runs and the Huskies iced the cake with four more runs in the fifth to make the final tally 14-0.
In the game, SCSU outhit the Peacocks 14-2. Cal Giese was the pitcher of record for SCSU with 5.0 innings of work, one hit allowed and six strikeouts. Kyle Boser, Tyler Gentz and Luke Hansen all added relief innings pitched in the shutout.
At the plate, Jackson Goplen blasted a two-run homer in the fourth inning. He ended the day with three hits, three RBIs and two runs. Zach Metzger also had three hits and three RBIs in the game, while Judd Davis had three hits and two RBIs. SCSU's offense was also enchanced by Jordan Joseph with a double and four RBIs.
In game two, the Huskies trailed 1-0 after four innings of play against UIU. In the fifth inning, Bo Schmitz scored on a sac fly by Joseph to tie the game. In the sixth inning, the Huskies charted the go ahead runs on a two-run home run to left center field by Mathew Meyer that scored Metzger.
SCSU and Upper Iowa both had four hits apiece in this pitchers' showdown at Faber. Austin Caspsersen tallied 7.2 innings of work for SCSU and gained the victory with two strikeouts, four hits and one run allowed. David Kroger registered the save with three strikeouts in the final 1.1 innings of the work. Ryan Munoz pitched 7.0 innings for UIU and allowed four hits and three runs.
The Huskies and Peacocks will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday, April 2, at St. Cloud's Joe Faber Field with a Noon doubleheader. Tickets for the games are available at the gate. Please check the website for any weather related schedule changes.
