Huskies split NSIC doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth

Duluth, Minn.- The St. Cloud State baseball team (25-9, 16-6) split a NSIC twin bill against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (15-15, 10-8) on April 11 at Wade Stadium. The Huskies took the first game 4-3 and dropped the second game by a 7-3 decision.
The loss moves the Huskies back one spot in the standings to third place, behind Minnesota State and Augustana.
In game one, the Huskies had to recover after surrendering a run in the bottom of the third. St. Cloud State rebounded in a big way in the fourth, scoring four runs in the inning. The fun started when Mitch Mallek singled to third base, scoring Bo Schmitz. The Huskies added two more runs when Logan Swann tripled out to right center field, bringing in Mallek and Mathew Meyer. Cooper Maas sealed the deal when he singled, to bring in Swann from third.
The Huskies then turned their eyes on defense, as they held off the Bulldogs advances through the remaining 2.5 innings. The Bulldogs added two runs late in the bottom of the seventh, but the Huskies were able to stifle the comeback and hold on for the 4-3 win.
Cal Giese was the pitcher of record for the Huskies, improving his season record to 6-2 overall. He threw a complete 7.0 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, and striking out eight batters.
In game two, the Bulldogs were able to carry over their momentum from late in the first game, and get up on on the Huskies 4-0 by the bottom of the fourth. The Huskies scored the next three runs, getting two in the top of the sixth. Judd Davis tripled to right center to bring in Maas, and later Jordan Joseph singled to short to bring in Davis. The Huskies added their third run in the seventh, with Bo Schmitz running into home on a wild pitch to get the Huskies within one at 3-4. The Bulldogs would add two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to solidify the victory.
Shannon Ahern drew the loss for the Huskies, moving to 2-2 on the season. He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four runs, and striking out one. David Kroger pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two runs and striking out one. Zach Siggelkow and Miles Nablo closed out the game for the Huskies each pitching an inning. Siggelkow only gave up two hits and struck out three, while Nablo gave up one run and striking one out.
The Huskies will wrap up their road game stretch, with their next six games played on away fields. The Huskies face a big challenge this weekend when they travel to Mankato to take on the #21 Mavericks of Minnesota State on April 14-15 for a pair of doubleheaders. Games will begin at 1:30 on both days, weather permitting.
