Mankato, Minn.- The St. Cloud State baseball team (26-10, 17-7 NSIC) split a pair of key NSIC games in Mankato on April 13 against the Minnesota State Mavericks (27-6, 22-2). The Huskies were victorious in game one winning 5-2 before dropping game two by a 10-3 decision.
The split keeps the Huskies in third place in the NSIC baseball standings, two spots behind the league leading Mavericks in first.
In the first game the Huskies got up quick over the Mavericks, when Bo Schmitz singled out to center field to bring in Judd Davis and put the Huskies up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. The Huskies registered the next run as well when Jackson Goplen made his triumphant return when hit went yard to put the Huskies up 2-0 in the fourth.
The Mavericks attempted to gain ground when Hunter Walsh singled to bring in Jordan Hart and cut the lead to 2-1. The Huskies would answer in the next inning when Jordan Joseph singled to bring in Cooper Maas to increase the lead to 3-1.
Josh Wenzel would homer in the sixth for Minnesota State, but the Huskies would not be deterred from increasing their lead. In the seventh inning, the Huskies made use of two errors by Mavericks pitcher Brody Rodning as Logan Swann and Ethan Ibarra scored on two consecutive errors to end the game at 5-2.
In the game, the Huskies outhit Minnesota State by a 6-4 margin in the game. Dominic Austing pitched a complete game for the Huskies striking out nine and walking one of batters he faced. Austing moves to 5-2 on the season. For the Mavericks, the loss was dealt to Rodning who moves to 4-2 on the season.
The second game began as if it would carry over the momentum for the Huskies as they racked up three quick runs in the first inning. Judd Davis got the fun started for the Huskies as he was brought in by a Jordan Joseph single to center. Quickly following Davis were Mitch Mallek and Joseph after Bo Schmitz singled out to center, giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.
That lead would not last long however, as the Mavericks bat had heated up in the time between games. The Mavericks would take over the lead in one fell swoop as Hart homered with the bases loaded, bringing in three of his teammates with him to make the game 4-3 in the Mavericks favor. The Huskies would not score another run in the game, as the Mavericks added another in the first, a run in the second and fourth innings, and three runs in the eighth en route to the 10-3 victory.
The Mavericks edged the Huskies out by thinnest of margins for hits, going one up on the visitors at 8-7. Aaron Hammann was the pitcher of the record for the Huskies, moving his season record to 2-2, while Nick Belzer registered the victory for the Mavericks, moving to 4-0.
The Huskies and Mavericks are slated to play another pair of doubleheaders tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m., weather permitting. Check in with scsuhuskies.com for updates or changes to these games.
