Mankato, Minn.- The St. Cloud State baseball team (27-11, 18-8 NSIC) split a pair of twin bill against Minnesota State (28-7, 23-3 NSIC) on April 14 from the MSU Baseball Complex. The Huskies dropped the first game in nine innings by a tight 5-4 decision, and rebounded with a stellar 9-5 come from behind victory in game two.
The first game opened with the Huskies getting on the board first in the top of the first inning when Mathew Meyer singled out to the right field line to bring in Jordan Joseph and put the Huskies up 1-0. The Huskies would add a run to their lead when Mitch Mallek went yard in the second inning to put the Huskies up 2-0. The Mavericks would answer in the bottom of the second getting one runner in to cut the lead back down to one.
The Huskies would add another run in the top of the third when Bo Schmitz singled to bring in Judd Davis and put the Huskies back up 3-1. The Mavericks would answer in the bottom of that inning however when Dylan Dresel reached on a fielder's choice, eventually gaining second base, as Teddy Peterson scored on the throw, followed in by Luke Waldek to tie the game up at 3-3.
Another Mitch Mallek bomb would later bring in Bo Schmitz to put the Huskies back up 4-3, but the Mavericks would tie it up in the sixth inning, forcing extra innings in the seven inning game one. Two innings would pass before the Mavericks would be able to break the tie and solidify the game one win by a 5-4 margin.
The Huskies outhit the Mavericks 11-10 in the first game, as Miles Nablo was the pitcher of record. Nablo's season record moves to 3-1 following the loss. Aaron Rozek was the pitcher of record for the Mavericks, moving his record to 1-1.
In game two, which was determined to be a seven inning game due to the nine innings the first game took, the Huskies had to battle back after surrendering five runs in the first two innings. The Huskies however, were staging their biggest comeback yet.
In the top of the third inning, Schmitz got the scoring started for the Huskies, hitting a single out to right field. An error by the right fielder allowed Schmitz to proceed to third base, bringing in Joseph. In the fourth, Cooper Maas grounded out to set up a double play at second and first, that allowed Jackson Goplen to get in to home base, making the score 5-2. In the fifth inning, the Huskies added another run when Meyer singled out to center, bringing in Davis.
The sixth inning is when the Huskies finally overtook the Mavericks in what can only be determined as an onslaught. Ethan Ibarra sent a hit to right field, bringing in Mallek. Jordan Joseph then advanced on a fielder's choice, advancing the Huskies on base and bringing in Logan Swann to tie the game at 5-5. Ibarra then scored on a wild pitch to put the Huskies up 6-5. Schmitz then singled out to left field and brought in Joseph. Meyer then reached second on an error by the second baseman, which brought in Schmitz. Finally, Meyer was brought in to home when Trevor Patterson walked Swann to bring in Meyer for the ninth and final Huskies run.
The Huskies and Mavericks had seven hits each in the second game. Kevin Bolder registered his first win of the season for the Huskies, pitching five of the seven innings, allowing no runs in those five innings, and only one hit. Cody O'Brien (1-1) was the pitcher of record for the Mavericks.
The Huskies will close out their eight game road stretch on April 19 when they travel to play Minnesota Crookston for a doubleheader before returning home to host Winona State on April 22-23. The weekend series against Winona State will be full of full activities with April 22 marking Alumni Day and a ceremony celebrating the 2016 NSIC Tournament Championship team will be held. On April 23 the Huskies will celebrate "Bigger Than Baseball" day, when they encourage fans to bring in canned food and other donations for Catholic Charities. It will also serve as SCSU Parents Day.
